TJ…. There are no facts that show Hagler was one of the 3 greatest middleweights.. And “boxing scribes” know nothing.. They may like boxing but they don’t know boxing.. And there is a much more varied opinion on Hagler than you think — especially since Leonard is the only one close to his weight where you could say it was a boxing match … and Leonard was coming off a 3-year layoff with one fight in the previous 5 years.. Leonard knew he was going to win because he could see Hagler couldn’t really jab pudgy little Duran well, attack him well, or counter with a straight left well.

Hagler was a great fighter, I’ll admit that, but he couldn’t box. He could load and throw, but that’s not boxing.

Any great middleweight boxer beats Hagler because he lacked a good jab and good straight left… Prime Monzon, Valdez, Toney, Jones, Hopkins, Martinez, Reggie Johnson, Nunn, McCallum, Golovkin, would all be too skilled for him. If you look over his middleweight opponents they all had the skill level of Macklin, Pavlik, Williams or worse …

Hearns did box Hagler… He fought him in a phone booth.. Stupid strategy.. Just like he was doing when Barkley nailed Tommy.. I blame Steward for letting Tommy slug and telling him to take Hagler out.. It takes more than skill.. You have to have a brain.

Read other posts on this forum -even today – and you will see I often agree with you or praise you, but in this instance I am just stating facts and the facts are that every knowledgeable scribe throughout my 30 years in the game has praised MARVELOUS MARVIN HAGLER- who you know is not one of my favourites as he destroyed my favourite THOMAS HEARNS in 3.

Don’t try and mislead the readers on this site….

I give you praise when you merit it, but point out your flaws too as you will agree sometimes you are seriously pompous with your viewpoints and don’t allow others to have there’s – even if they back it up with facts/ observations!

TJ and Boxer Puncher…. You guys have no argument so you attack me personally… Personal attacks and no arguments … Be MEN.. Explain Hagler’s poor showings and his failings.

You know Rodrigo Valdez flattened a prime Bennie Briscoe with one punch.. Hagler’s fight with an aged and washed up Briscoe resembled a sparring session..

You know Marcos Geraldo was knocked out 10 times previously when he fought Hagler.. You know that fight resembled a slow sparring session, and Hagler couldn’t stop Geraldo or floor him.

You know Sugar Ray Leonard was coming off a 3-year-layoff when he whipped Hagler… Leonard fought one fight in the previous 5 years.

Don’t give me any bull about how he could match up with Carlos Monzon, who went over 80 fights, fighting the best middleweights in the world, fought more successful title defenses than Hagler against better middleweights, and didn’t lose to a welterweight..

Monzon crushed ATG welterweight Jose Napoles like a Middleweight Champion should.

EVERY SINGLE KNOWLEDGEABLE fight scribe from Hugh McIlvaney, Colin Hart, Burt Randoph Sugar (RIP), has written that MARVELOUS MARVIN HAGLER was one of perhaps the three finest Middlleweights of any genereation…

This hurts me as I am a THOMAS HEARNS fan, but I grew up watching Marvin hammer his opponents, no matter where he had to go to do it…. He made switch hitting something of a must for boxers and fight fans alike, just like FLOYD has made the art of defence into something of an art form for all of us today!

BOXER PUNCHER

You are correct about the weak era of the likes of Bernard Hopkins and Joe Calzaghe racking up 20 defences in…

Although B-Hop has proven against, young strong men at a higher weight (!68 and 175) that he would have been a handful in any era.

I believe so too would Calzaghe but I wish he wouldn’t give us the same old BS that he actually fought anyone that was good and in their prime.

Joe was really a Light Heavy lucky enough to fight at 168 (with a day’s weigh-in grace)!
He would not have been able to compete circa 1978-1984 with the Light Heavies of that era (IMHO, the best division in boxing at that time as it was knee-deep in considerable and diverse talent)…

Just think BOTH Joe Calzaghe and SVEN OTTKE amassed 20 title defences each at the same period at 168….. Seven fought consistently better opponents and without any sought of punch!

IMHO this shows how WEAK the division was between 1997 and 2007!!!

B-Hop is still swinging for the fences because he had old school teaching from the likes of Bouie Fischer (RIP)! Whereas the modern day teaching on the whole is lacking (although this is being addressed with a slew of knew, keen trainers eager to learn from the old ways and implement with the new)!

Boxer Puncher… You are so ignorant it stinks..

Hagler even admitted he would probably lose to Monzon..

Monzon beat Rodrigo Valdez TWICE..

Rodrigo Valdez was faster, harder punching, and more skilled than ANY natural middleweight Hagler ever fought in his life.. Monzon went more than 80 fights without suffering a defeat at the end of his career.. He had more successful title defenses, fought 98 fights, and retired at an older age than Hag.

Rodrigo Valdez smashed a PRIME Bennie Briscoe STIFF with ONE (1) powerhouse left hook.. Hagler couldn’t even knock an AGED Bennie Briscoe down… It was another timid sparring session like Hagler’s pedestrian decision over Marcos Geraldo… A guy who 10 other middleweights previously knocked out — and Hagler couldn’t even put the China-chin down.

Don’t tell me about all the tough guys Hagler fought because there weren’t any.. He never had to face a natural prime middleweight who was any good.

Posted June 30, 2013 11:51 pm

Boxer Puncher

And carlos monzon was a flat footed methodical fighter and not versatile, he won most his fights on toughness a good jab, good power and attrition, he would have been battered over the distance in a convincing win for hagler, there probably wouldn’t have been a ko because monzon was tough I will give him that, but he was not as versatile and skilled as hagler, hagler was every bit as tough as monzon, punched harder and was much more of a complete and versatile fighter in every dept, hagler by punishing, convincing 15 rd decision.

Squared-Circle Real Talk (a.k.a. The Lion King of Beat Street)

Clowns are saying Mack is an average nobody to try and take away from GGG’s extraordinary performance last night. It’s pure B.S.!

FACT: Mack damn nearly beat Maravilla. He knocked SM down in the 7th and was leading on ALL cards after 10 rounds. And he should have won a major MW Title/Strap when he boxed Sturm’s ears off in Germany, but got ROBBED.

Mack is one of the very best 4-7 MWs in the world, and the way in which Triple G effortlessly sliced-up his face and brutally stopped him with a left hook to the liver was astounding.

GGG is the P4P BEST boxer in the entire world, hands down. He’s the absolute truth. ‘The Natural.” Real talk.

If hagler had fought in hopkins weak era and faced his weak competition and had gotten his first title shot at around 20 fights like hopkins did, hagler would have had 45-50 successful title defenses no doubt in my mind.

Posted June 30, 2013 8:58 pm

Boxer Puncher

Hopkins never beat a great fighter in their prime he lost to jones in his prime by being battered from pilar to post he fought in the weakest MW division ever and struggled with fighters hagler would have slaughtered within 3-4 rds. Who is tavoris cloud and jean pascal, he beat a weight drained tarver he pulled the tarver on tarver ,he had tarver lose close to 50 pounds in a short period of time to face him, much like tarver did to jones with similar results. Please get real Hopkins is simply schooling green very limted one dimensional fighters and padding his record.

Macklin is no bum….gennady was just to good for him.
Golovkin is the most exciting fighter I have seen in years, and he does it in the ring, not on twitter or in front of the camera…his hype is well justified, because its old school talent that has got him it, not decapitations on t-shirts, or fights at post fight interviews,he hasn,t slapped no ones face, or brought an ex girlfriend to a presser,or had his dad brush his hair in the ring, he hasn,t hung out with rappers, fanned his face with wads of dollar bills, or shown the American forces in Afghanistan his Bentley collection through the magic of Skype, while they are losing limbs to I.E.D,s,….this guy is class through and through, when he dropped macklin last night and their feet were tangled, he stopped his follow up punch….most other fighters would have let tht land, he didn,t…..that’s not a calculated decision, that was just his natural response, he doesn,t come across as desperate…..just confident .
I look forward with relish to watching this guys career pan out….I consider myself a fan of our sport, and this guy looks like someone I would be happy to call a champion….good luck to the fella.

…..,”The second coming of Marvin Hagler”….. You’re forgetting a few things.

Hagler already lost to Bobby Watts and Willie Monroe when he fought 10 times previously KO’d Marcos Geraldo… That fight was a pedestrian affair that had less action than Mitchell vs Banks II.. It took Hagler two (2) tries to win the Middleweight Championship..

One of Hagler’s title defenses was against a guy who fought his first 67 fights as a lightweight.. It didn’t exactly set the house on fire.. In fact it drew boos from the crowd when Hagler started dancing around.

One of Haglers title defenses was against a welterweight making his 1st start after a 3-year layoff.. That challenger had fought only one fight in the previous 5 years.. Hagler lost that fight too — and decided to quit boxing at 32, when he was just a little older than GGG…

The reason Marv quit was because Leonard didn’t seem anxious to fight him again for a reasonable purse split — and there were some great young middleweights contenders coming ujp who were better than any natural 160-pounder Hagler ever fought.. Guys like Michael Nunn, Mike McCallum etc… Hagler said, “I ddin’t want to embarrass myself fighting these young guys.”

During the last 3 years of his Championship reign, 1985, 1986, and 1987, Hagler fought only one (1) fight a year and fought lighter fighters moving up in weight.. I don’t blame Marv for retiring because Leonard refused to face Michael Nunn or Mike McCallum as well.. Leonard was stripped of the title he won from Hagler … and fought who he damned well pleased.

So GGG… with a better winning ratio… better KO ratio… and who would be favored to beat great Middleweight Champions Sergio Martinez and undefeated Peter Quillin if he fought them both on the same night — definitely is looking more impessive than Hagler.

Its still unknow to say 100% that triple g is the next super star because he hssdnt fought a 100% top level guy, but to say he is a hype job is really stupid. Look triple g is completly destroying b+ level fighters with ease, he isnt even breaking a sweat doing so which means when he gets inbthe ring with a A+ type fighter he will do really well based on his pefformance of fighting really good fighters.

“Kid chocolate or chavez jr should be next for ggg ” Chavez Jr. is irrelevant at this point in time. He needs a couple of come-back fights before he takes on Golovkin. Quillin would be a good opponent because GGG hasn’t fought a boxer with Quillin’s skills. Or speed. I would like to see Golovkin face and beat Martinez however. Murray nearly turned out to be the spoiler for Martinez. I think Golovkin most certainly would end Martinez’s career.

A prime Hagler would have destroyed them both within five rds the same applies to Golovkin, chewed them up and spit them out. Mark my words when he faces a fighter who can punch and take his punch he is going to suffer his first loss. I actually believe a prime Kelly Pavlik would beat Golovkin, why? because Pavlik can take a shot, applies relentless pressure, and can punch, those are the types of fighters that are going to give your boy fits and like I said these are the types of fighters that are going to give him his first loss mark my words.

he is a small MW but he does have the Xfactor its easier said than done when you got someone who has power like that to say he is open to a right hand or left because his power overwhelms ability’s he reminds me of chavez in the lightweight division blunt power would negate fighters ability’s to land

Posted June 30, 2013 2:22 am

Informer

I think GGG is good, but it doesn’t hurt when you opponent is scared s**tless of you! He is wide open for a right hand and his defense is not that tight. He can be hit. Don’t expect Martinez to do it because he’s too old. He should clean out the MW division first. Would not be wise to go up to 168 yet because believe me, Froch and Ward are definitely not afraid.

Posted June 30, 2013 2:12 am

funny thing if he can keep knocking out contenders all the other fighters wont have a choice but to face him he is a star in the making to me he is already elite because of the power he carries in those punches.

DJ Daz

I’m a Daniel Geale fan and after watching this fight I’m glad he took the money fight with Mundine instead of facing Golovkin. HBO would be wanting to offer some serious money for either Geale or Martinez to get in the ring with Golovkin. I can see pretty much all of the big names like Chavez, ALvarez, Ward, Froch & Kessler will all avoid him too unless there is serious money to be made. It will be interesting to see who will want to get in the ring with Golovkin after that effortless display, I dare say we might see him fight a couple of fringe middleweight contenders before this year is done. A very impressive performance.
