He needs to learn when to throw. He tends to be first, which is good, but he needs to be in the right position to due so. Khan has the foot and hand speed to do this. I think he could be taught this alot easier than tighten up his defense. He could also learn to be a better counter puncher, with his power, a good sharp counter punch would do wonders for the boy. Get himself in a position to hit and not get countered, that is the key!

Wow! An article assessing Amir Khan without any bile directed at the kid.
I agree with the identified problems however it does matter who is training Khan as whoever it is has to acknowledge that the problems are worth working on and that correcting them will require a more professional relationship between boxer and trainer than Khan’s current amateurish regimen of two 6 week training sessions per year with nothing in between. Roach could barely give Khan this amount of gym time and so improvements of the nature outlined in the article could never be achieved – however Virgil Hunter has now told Khan that he has to move full-time to California so that they can have the amount of training time a professional requires and so that Amir has the training regimen that other boxers like Lamont Peterson, sorry cheaterson, take for granted.

One more thing – I don’t see much change at all in Khan with Virgil Hill

Exciting fighter and alot of fun to watch but I totally agree with the author he has a lot to learn.
In a rematch with Garcia I can see him beating Garcia again in the in the beginning but Garcia will knock him out again in the later rounds.

captain hook

so if you are journeyman pro you will now how to punch and defend in same time?

it doesnt matter if you are amateur or pro, you are good boxer or not. its problem in khans head, not in his amateur style. if somebody is a good boxer he would transfer in pro easily

Good article. At last a balanced assessment of a still very good fighter.
