News: Alex Perez; Beltran vs Meza-Clay; Danny Jacobs

Alex “The Brick City Bullet” Perez, 10-0, 6 KO’s captured the WBC’s CABOFE (Caribbean Boxing Federation) Welterweight title on March 14th In Puerto Rico. He came off of a 15 month layoff before that fight, not by any fault of his own, but because every time he was scheduled to fight there were problems with opponents falling out and promoters not making sure there was an opponent for him ready to go come fight night. Perez was in the gym training for fights that weren’t to be the entire 15 months, and the time has made him more and more eager to fight as often as possible..

He will be returning to the ring on May 9th in Atlantic City, on the undercard of Hector “Macho” Camacho vs. Luis Ramon “Yori Boy” Campas, just two months after picking up the WBC’s Carribean belt. Manager, Jose Rosario and his team plan to keep him busy the rest of the way in 09, because Perez is a hungry fighter. Alex has been at it 100% for a long time. He was 53-3 as an amateur where he was a 3-time Golden Gloves Champion and a 3-time Diamond Gloves Champ. He also captured the State Championship once before turning pro in late 2004.

Perez was born and raised in The Brick City, Newark New Jersey where he has lived his whole life in the Baxter Terrace projects. He is active in the community, always making himself available to lend a helping hand to kids who need a positive role model, guidance and good advice. Boxing has saved Perez and he makes sure he is always there for the kids and his friends in need in the gym. Keep an eye on the Brick City Bullet now, because he is a shooting star who is on the verge of big things in the near future!

FERNANDO BELTRAN JR. VS. MONTE MEZA-CLAY HEADLINES CHAMPIONSHIP FIGHT CARD ON JUNE 19 IN LAREDO, TEXAS; TELEVISED LIVE ON ESPN

Promoters Arthur Pelullo/Banner Promotions and Rodney Berman/Golden Gloves will present a sensational championship fight card on Friday, June 19, 2009, at the Laredo Entertainment Center, located at 6700 Arena Boulevard in Laredo, Texas. The main event, co-feature, and other selected fights will be televised live on ESPN2, ESPN Desportes, their Spanish-Language Network, and ESPN 360.com.

In the main event scheduled for 12 rounds, Fernando Beltran Jr., 32-3-1 with 18 knockouts, of Culiacan, Mexico, the International Boxing Federation’s number four ranked featherweight contender, will make his first defense of the IBF Latino featherweight title against Monty Meza-Clay, 28-2 with 19 knockouts, of Rankin, Pennsylvania, the IBF’s number six ranked contender.

Beltran, a 27 year-old lefthander, won the vacant title with a 12 round split decision against Miguel Roman of Ciudad Juarez, Mexico, at the Laredo Entertainment Center in his last fight on March 20.

Doug Fischer reported on The Ring blog [excerpts]: Two-time title challenger Fernando Beltran Jr. kept his hopes for a third title shot alive with a hard-fought split-decision over Miguel Roman, who put forth a spirited effort in the main event of the ESPN2-televised main event….

Beltran, who won by two scores of 115-113, mixed his offense from a distance and in close, alternating boxing with two-to-toe exchanges. However, it was Roman, who took the fight by a lopsided 117-111 tally on one scorecard, who won over the crowd with his non-stop aggression and relentless body attack. [End Fischer item]

Meza-Clay, now 28 years old, is coming off a loss in his last fight in January but had previously won eight fights in a row, six by knockout, which included his career-best win in February, 2008 – a seventh-round TKO against former IBF featherweight world champion Eric Aiken.

After the fight, Dan Rafael wrote on ESPN.com [excerpts]: Don’t you just love Meza-Clay? He’s just 5-foot-2, but what he lacks in size he more than makes up for with his non-stop punching and his ability to get inside and work the body. From the outset of the “Friday Night Fights” main event, Meza-Clay took it to Aiken, who won a featherweight belt in May 2006…. Although Meza-Clay was in control from the start, this was an entertaining scrap as both men threw and landed a lot of punches. By the seventh round, Aiken had almost nothing left and Meza-Clay bullied him into the ropes and was teeing off with a flurry of 25-plus unanswered shots when the referee properly intervened. [End Rafael item]

Monty said, “I have the same approach for every fight. I just impose my will on him, let him try to figure me out. I’m going to do me – I’m going to stick to my gameplan. There’s nothing different other than – ring the bell, let’s fight!”

The co-featured bout is to be announced.

2008 U.S. Olympian Demetrius Andrade, 4-0 with 4 knockouts, of Providence, Rhode Island, will also be featured on the card in a four-round jr. middleweight bout against an opponent to be announced. One of boxing’s top young prospects, Demetrius is fighting for the fifth time since turning pro last October.

More exciting preliminary fights will complete the card.

Danny “Golden Child” Jacobs Steps in for Kirkland vs Mike Walker on the Pacquiao-Hatton Undercard!

By: Jason Sardelis

Golden Boy’s Top Super middleweight prospect Brooklyn’s Danny “Golden Child” Jacobs continues the intense fast forward training and fight schedule that won him a National Junior Olympics, a US under 19 National Championship, Two National PAL Championships, and a National Golden Gloves welterweight championship, a National Golden Gloves middleweight championship, the United States Amateur middleweight championship and four New York Golden Gloves championships losing only seven of 140 amateur bouts.

Staying true to that form Jacobs has fought 15 times in seventeen months, compiling a record of 15-0, 14Ko’s. The “Golden Child” just fought last Saturday taking on Jose “Terrible” Varela 23-5, 16Ko’s in what many considered to be Jacob’s first true test. Passing the “test” with flying colors the Brooklyn based fighter made easy work of Varela sending him home at 1:23 of the second round. Jacobs will step for Golden Boy’s other Super Middleweight star James “Mandingo” Kirkland who was scheduled to meet Chicago’s Mike “Midnight Stalker” Walker 19-1-2, 12 Ko’s May 2nd on the Manny Pacquiao / Ricky Hatton undercard but was forced to pull out due to an arrest for gun possession and subsequent incarceration.

Walker a two-time world amateur champion comes in winning a closely contested rough majority decision revenging his draw over with Antwun “Kid Dynamite” Echols on this past October. Walker’s only loss comes to southpaw David Lopez by unanimous decision between the Echol’s fights. This fight adds some new excitement to the sold out card and the very interesting new match-up will be the third of four bouts May 2nd to be televised live at 9:00 pm ET / 6:oopm PT
on HBO pay-per-view.
