THE Mexico-based World Boxing Council (WBC) has appointed Filipino judge Rey Danseco again in the world class championship bout between a popular former Thai titlist and a highly rated Mexican. WBC president Jose Sulaiman appointed Danseco, a sports editor in Manila by profession, to perform as judge for the interim title of the WBC flyweight world championship between Pongsaklek Wonjongkam of Thailand and Julio Cesar Miranda of Mexico to be held on April 24 in Bangkok, Thailand..
Danseco will be working in his fourth international boxing championship bouts in the last 30 days, following his appointment in the WBC International title bouts that won by super flyweight Sylvester Lopez of Zamboanga Sibugay over Korean national champion Jong-Nam Park last April 5 in Pasig City and RP titlist Denver Cuello of Iloilo city against Japanese Hiroshi Matsumoto on April 19 at the Araneta Coliseum.
Sulaiman was impressed with performance of the 36-year old native of Calauag in Quezon province in the four widely publicized title bouts in Mexico City last year, including the WBC eliminator between Filipino Juanito Rubillar and ex-champ Omar Nino Romero on June 14 and between Rubillar again against WBC light flyweight champ Edgar Sosa on Nov. 29.
Other judges in the Wonjongkam-Miranda title bout are Brian McMahon (Australia) and Dr. James Jen Kin (California). The third man in the ring will be Yuji Fukuchi (Japan) while Major Lee (Korea) has tapped as supervisor.
Other notable boxers Danseco had judged in the last fiver years were WBO bantamweight king Gerry Penalosa, ex-WBC minimumweight title challenger Ken Nakajima of Japan, former WBC light flyweight king Eric Ortiz, former North American Boxing Federation light flyweight king Adrian Hernandez, reigning WBC Continental Americas lightweight king Reyes Sanchez all of Mexico.
Wonjongkam is the same person who dethroned Filipino Malcolm Tunacao with first round knockout win for the WBC flyweight title in 2001. He defended the title 16 times until losing it to Japanese Daisuke Naito two years ago.
SCPD, NYPD to Take the Ring To Benefit Military Veterans
Second Annual “Heroes for Heroes” Event to be Announced on Tuesday; Burt Young of Rocky Fame to Appear at Press Conference
Representatives of the Suffolk County Police and NYPD will announce at a press conference in Bohemia on Tuesday the second annual “Heroes for Heroes” boxing matches, slated for Saturday, May 9 in Brentwood. Proceeds will benefit charitable causes, including support for military veterans.
Academy Award-nominated actor Burt Young, best known for portraying Sylvester Stallone’s brother-in-law and friend Paulie in the Rocky film series, will be at the press conference to support the boxers. Young, a veteran of the US Marine Corps, is also a boxing fan and former boxer.
Suffolk County Police boxers in the first-ever “Heroes for Heroes” event last year defeated a team from the FDNY. This year’s team is eager to repeat the feat against New York’s Finest.
The press conference will be held at the SCPD’s training center, Heavy Hitters Boxing and Fitness Center in Bohemia.
