Roach thinks Arum wanted to protect Crawford from Pacquiao

Trainer Freddie Roach believes a possible reason why the unbeaten Terence Crawford (27-0, 18 KOs) wasn’t put in with Manny Pacquiao (57-6-2, 38 KOs) for his next fight because Top Rank promoter Bob Arum might have wanted to protect the 28-year-old Crawford from being pushed into such a tough fight at an early point in his career.

Instead of Pacquiao fighting Crawford, which was a fight that a fair amount of fans wanted to see, Arum selected Tim Bradley (33-1-1, 13 KOs) for a third fight against the Filipino star. Pacquiao and Bradley will now be facing each other on April 9 at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Roach: Crawford rejected Pacquiao fight

In a really surprising bit of news, Manny Pacquiao’s trainer Freddie Roach is saying that unbeaten WBO 140lb champion Terence Crawford (27-0, 19 KOs) turned down a fight against Manny Pacquiao (57-6-2, 38 KOs) for April 9th. Roach says Crawford said no to a fight against Pacquiao, and that Top Rank promoter Bob Arum said they wouldn’t try and get Crawford to take the fight with Pacquiao yet.

Pacquiao said last week that he plans on fighting for the last time against WBO welterweight champion Tim Bradley (33-1-1, 13 KOs) in their fight on April 9th on HBO pay-per-view from the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Lundy promises to beat Terence Crawford

Lundy promises to beat Terence Crawford

(Photo credit Ed Mulholland (Top Rank) NEW YORK (Jan. 12th, 2016) — Brimming with confidence during Tuesday’s press conference at Madison Square Garden, Hank Lundy made it abundantly clear he’s more than just a backup plan for his upcoming opponent, Terence Crawford, boldly predicting the coronation of a new 140-pound king on Feb. 27th.

While the mainstream media has painted Lundy (26-5-1, 13 KOs) as the second or third choice among the Crawford camp for their fighter’s first title defense of 2016 (contenders Mauricio Herrera, Viktor Postol, etc., reportedly turned down the fight), Lundy promises to steal the show when the two square off for Crawford’s World Boxing Organization (WBO) Junior Welterweight Title in the main event of HBO’s World Championship Boxing doubleheader at The Theater at Madison Square Garden, promoted by Top Rank and CES Boxing.

When it came time for undefeated junior welterweight world champion Terence Crawford to find a suitable opponent for his first title defense of 2016, only one of the so-called top 140-pounders in the world answered the challenge.

Philadelphia’s “Hammerin'” Hank Lundy, boxing’s most feared road warrior, will get his long-overdue title shot Saturday, Feb. 27th, 2016 against the unbeaten Crawford in the 12-round main event of HBO’s World Championship Boxing doubleheader at The Theater at Madison Square Garden for Crawford’s World Boxing Organization (WBO) title.

WBO light welterweight champion Terence Crawford (27-0, 19 KOs) failed to get the Manny Pacquiao fight on April 9th after being passed over by WBO welterweight champion Tim “Desert Storm” Bradley. Instead of getting the Pacquiao fight and making a huge killing, it’s looking like Crawford, 28, will need to settle for a fight against lightweight Hank Lundy (26-5-1, 13 KOs) on February 27th on HBO at Madison Square Garden in New York.

Pacquiao not ready to announce next opponent

Pacquiao not ready to announce next opponent

According to Top Rank promoter Bob Arum, Manny Pacquiao won’t be naming his next opponent tonight after all. Pacquiao, 36, was supposed to name his next fight on April 9th on the 84-year-old Arum’s truTV fight card tonight in San Juan, Puerto Rico. Arum had two of his Top Rank fighters Tim Bradley and Terence Crawford scheduled to be there, and it was a dead cinch that Pacquiao was going to make his old promoter a very, very happy man by naming one of those guys as his next opponent. But unfortunately for Arum, Pacquiao won’t be naming his next opponent as of yet.

Arum: 'Waiting on Pacquiao' / Wants Crawford Over Khan

Top Rank CEO, Bob Arum, has stated he is hopeful that Manny Pacquiao will select fellow Top Rank star, Terence Crawford as the opponent for the Filipino’s career swansong in April 2016, rather than Britain’s Amir Khan.

Both Crawford and Khan are said to still be in the frame, as Arum says the decision is solely Pacquiao’s to make, though when you consider the obvious financial benefits to the TR boss of making an in-house fight with Crawford over one with Khan – who is advised by Al Haymon and has his own promotional company – it’s pretty clear to see who is most likely getting the call.

Crawford vs. Jean: Top Rank marinates Terrence for Pacquiao

Unfortunately, Terrence Crawford’s 2015 is not going the way Top Rank wanted it to and by year’s end it will be considered somewhat of a loss. Sure, Crawford’s bank account gets bigger and there’s nothing wrong with that but his 2014 fighter of the year momentum has all but faded. In the spring, Bob Arum spoke of names such as Lucas Matthysse and Manny Pacquiao as possible opponents in Crawford’s near future.
