Tyson Fury Vs. Shannon Briggs: Car crash or Smash hit!?

Tyson Fury Vs. Shannon Briggs: Car crash or Smash hit!?

Shock, horror – heavyweight superstar (personality) Shannon Briggs, still on suspension for a failed drugs test, has called out heavyweight giant (in every sense of the word) Tyson Fury, still on suspension for an alleged failed drugs test.

Now, say what you want about the very notion of this fight – a disgrace, a sure-fire bullseye of a black eye for the sport, a farce, a car crash in waiting – but admit this: you WOULD watch it if actually happened. Let’s not be hypocrites here, we all know we would tune in, not only to the fight itself, but to all the pre-fight fun and games masquerading as press conferences, head-to-heads, etc.

Shannon Briggs: Is it all over?

Shannon Briggs: Is it all over?

As fight fans have surely read by now, super vocal former heavyweight champ Shannon Briggs failed a recent pre-fight drugs test; the coming up positive ruining the 45 year old’s spurious WBA “world ” title chance of a lifetime against fellow veteran Fres Oquendo.

This title bout, though much maligned, would likely have seen to it that Briggs would win a slice of a belt; possibly getting himself into position for bigger fights down the road – and of course in line for one last big payday before the “Let’s Go Champ” chants would fall silent. But now, his career and reputation in dire straights, Briggs’ fighting days may have come to an end. Sans the last big pay day.

Shannon Briggs ready, says “Fres Oquendo must fall” on June 3rd

Former two-time (lineal and WBO) heavyweight champ Shannon Briggs turned 45 in December, he has not fought since May of last year (a one-round blowout) and his critics say he should never, ever have fought again after the brutal 12-round hammering he took at the hands of Vitali Klitschko back in late 2010.

But Briggs believes he is on the verge of making history, his fight with Fres Oquendo, for a portion of the WBA heavyweight title, set for June 3rd at The Hard Rock in Hollywood, Florida. Briggs took to social media a few hours ago to announce the fight:

Shannon Briggs motivated to become first man to win heavyweight titles in three separate decades

Shannon Briggs is excited right now, for two reasons. Firstly, as the 45 year-old has posted on his social media page, purse bids take place today for Briggs’ WBA heavyweight title fight with Fres Oquendo. And secondly, Briggs is hugely motivated to put his name in the record books as the first heavyweight to have won a world title in three separate decades.

Briggs, who became the lineal heavyweight champ with his disputed decision victory over living legend George Foreman in 1997, also won the WBO belt, with a stunning, last round KO of Siarhei Liakhovich in 2006. Now, if he can see off “Fast Fres” – a man Briggs has a great nickname for with “Fried Nintendo” (you have to laugh!) – the entertaining New Yorker will achieve something he says “they can’t take away from me.”

Briggs vs Oquendo ordered to meet for vacant WBA “regular” belt; Briggs wants fight in London

Veteran heavyweights Shannon Briggs and Fres Oquendo have been ordered by the WBA to fight for the vacant “regular” version of the belt. Briggs, who has been chasing a big fight for the longest time – first one with Wladimir Klitschko then one with David Haye – has now got one, sort of.

Though Briggs Vs. Oquendo will not set the sport alight, it is a fight that will contest a title, with the winner possibly going on to a bigger fight or fights. Negotiations between the two are set to begin (if no deal can be reached the fight will go to purse bids) but already Briggs is over the moon happy and planning a venue for the fight.
