Matthysse: I’ll fight Mayweather or Canelo

matthysse564WBC interim light welterweight champion Lucas Matthysse is really hoping that WBA/WBC light welterweight champion Danny Garcia will step up to the plate on September 7th and agree to fight him. However, Matthysse is concerned that Garcia might not agree to the fight because he looked worried last Saturday night after Matthysse dispatched Lamont Peterson in three rounds at the Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City, New Jersey.

If Garcia decides it’s too dangerous a fight for him then Matthysse says he’s open to moving up in weight to fight Floyd Mayweather Jr. or Saul “Canelo” Alvarez if either of them are interested in the fight.

Mayweather has little time to select his next opponent for September

floyd#21Floyd Mayweather Jr. has little more than weeks to select his next opponent for his pay per view bout on September 14th if he wants Golden Boy Promotions and Showtime/CBS to be able to market the fight for it to be successful. Golden Boy Promotions CEO Richard Schaefer says he’s in talks with WBA/WBC junior middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez.

Showtime boss Stephen Espinosa told ESPN “I’m cautiously optimistic. There’s a lot of negotiating left to do, but often the biggest hurdle is convincing one fighter or the other to take the fight. That hurdle has been cleared. I truly believe Mayweather wants Caneo and that Canelo wants Mayweather, and that’s half the battle.”

canelo111 Most of us are learning to drive at fifteen years of age. We’re more concerned about our social lives, gals and guys and whose parents will be out of town next weekend so the killer party can go down. There’s only a handful of professions that would permit one still south of legal voting age to log hours upon hours of tedious work and still evade the scrutiny of the department of labor. Different countries have different rules. Such is the case in Mexico and the newly and truly confirmed prodigal son from Jalisco state, Santos Saul Alvarez Barragan.

We don’t often refer to him by this. Rather, we prefer his trade name, which is simply Canelo. Whether or not we may agree with his unanimous decision win over Austin “No Doubt” Trout this past weekend in San Antonio, Texas, there’s no denying that the kid has serious talent and more importantly in a global sense the potential for crossover appeal.

Saul Alvarez to fight on May 4th in Las Vegas, Nevada

alvarez1By Bill Phanco: WBC junior middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (41-0-1, 30 KO’s) is set to fight on the Floyd Mayweather Jr. undercard on May 4th at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Nevada.

The 22-year-old Canelo doesn’t have an opponent as of yet, but could see him in against WBA junior middleweight champion Austin Trout. He’s the only fighter that has been consistently mentioned for Canelo, and it’s kind of a situation where if Canelo doesn’t face him he’ll take major heat from the boxing world.

Trout: Golden Boy is protecting Canelo from me

trout2By Rob Smith: WBA World junior middleweight champion Austin Trout believes that Golden Boy Promotions are looking to protect their “Golden Goose” WBC junior middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez from facing him, and potentially suffering a loss that would wreck his marketability.

Trout said on his twitter “I personally don’t believe that Canelo is ducking me. I do believe that [Richard] Schaefer [the CEO of Golden Boy] and Golden Boy is though. Have faith in your boy, GB.”

That’s easier said than done. Schaefer has been pretty transparent about his reluctance to put Canelo in with Trout with his comments about Trout needing more big fight experience before he’d agree to let him fight Canelo. I guess it wasn’t enough that Trout beat former WBA junior middleweight champion Miguel Cotto in his last fight.

Canelo to fight on May 4th, possible opponents Angulo, Kirkland or Trout

By Jeff Sorby: It was confirmed by Golden Boy Promotions CEO Richard Schaefer on Tuesday that WBC junior middleweight champion Saul “Canelo”Alvarez will be fighting on the same card as Floyd Mayweather Jr. on May 4th at the MGM Grand, but not against Mayweather. According to the LA Times, Canelo will face one of the following fighters: Alfredo Angulo, James Kirkland or Austin Trout.

Schaefer isn’t mentioning who the leading candidate is for the fight but the fact that Angulo and Kirkland are both Golden Boy fighters would seem to suggest that one of those two will ultimately get the fight with Canelo. Schaefer hasn’t seemed all that interested in a Trout-Canelo fight when asked about it in the media. He feels that Trout hasn’t done enough yet for the fight, although if Angulo or Kirkland is selected, you have to wonder exactly they’ve done in their careers to get the fight.

By Bill Phanco: It seems that Golden Boy Promotions CEO Richard Schaefer is cool to the idea of letting WBC junior middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez fight a unification bout against Austin Trout for May 4th at the MGM Grand, in Las Vegas, Nevada. Schaefer has someone special in mind and he’s not about to give boxing fans any hints about who that fighter might be other than to rule out Trout as the guy that gets the fight.

By Rob Smith: WBC junior middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez’s manager Eddy Reynosa says that he and Canelo will be meeting with Golden Boy Promotions in two weeks to decide who will be Canelo’s next opponent for March or May 4th. Canelo had previously requested that he wanted to fight Floyd Mayweather Jr, Sergio Martinez or Miguel Cotto on May 4th, but it doesn’t appear that Golden Boy will be able to land any of those big names.
