On this day in 1982, at The Cobo Hall in Detroit, a huge upset took place. The great Roberto Duran, still in the tough, time-consuming process of regaining his reputation – the one that took such a hit due to the infamous “No Mas” fight of November 1980 – met a largely unknown fighter from Britain called Kirkland Laing.
In many ways, the great Roberto Duran is the comeback king of boxing. Duran, who we know enjoyed many incarnations in the ring, had done so much by the start of the 1980s – he had been world lightweight king for years (some says THE best ever at 135), he had both electrified and frightened fans as well as opponents with his ferocious fighting style and approach, and the Panamanian legend had scored a magnificent win over new superstar Sugar Ray Leonard, this in the summer of 1980.

Roberto Duran gave us, and the sport he added so much to, a vast number of great fights. “Hands Of Stone” thrilled, caused controversy, and quite literally terrified his opponents when he boxed as a lightweight (with many historians saying Duran deserves to be ranked as the greatest 135 pounders ever); while the Panamanian legend also ruled supreme at welterweight, light-middleweight and middleweight.
Although the great, indeed the wizard-like Wilfredo Benitez was never a member of the exclusive boxing club known and celebrated as “The Four Kings” (Marvin Hagler, Ray Leonard, Thomas Hearns and Roberto Duran), there are plenty of fight fans who strongly feel this was a major injustice.
Boxing great Roberto Duran says Canelo Alvarez can potentially be the greatest Mexican boxer in the sport’s history if he moves up to cruiserweight and wins his fifth division world title by beating WBC champion Ilunga Mababu on May 7th.
There were fireworks, courtesy of the newly opened Mirage casino and hotel in Las Vegas, but none were on display in the ring.
On this day back in 1983, two all-time greats collided in a genuine super-fight. Each a distinguished member of “The Four Kings,” Marvelous Marvin Hagler and Roberto Duran faced each other in a fascinating clash of styles and personalities.
The late, great Hector Camacho is a fighter who holds many distinctions, yet one of the less celebrated achievements on the part of “The Macho Man” is his ability to have ended the careers of not one but two all-time greats of the sport.
