Is Joshua too robotic and slow to beat Deontay Wilder?

I give new British heavyweight champion Anthony Joshua (15-0, 15 KOs) full credit for beating his chubby fellow countryman Dillian Whyte (16-1, 13 KOs) by a 7th round knockout last night in their pay-per-view fight on Sky Box Office, but the win really did nothing to change the perceptions that fans have about Joshua as far as him being slow, robotic and having stamina problems.

The victory also didn’t change the minds of this writer that Joshua is still too robotic to beat a 21st century athlete like WBC heavyweight champion Deontay Wilder or even some of the other top heavyweights in the division. Like I said, I give Joshua full credit for beating Whyte, but honestly that doesn’t mean jack to me.

During the interview, Szpilka warned Wilder that he’s coming to take his belt:

Promoter Lou Dibella thinks Polish underdog Artur Szpilka (20-1, 15 KOs) will let it all hang out in his title challenge next month against WBC heavyweight champion Deontay “Bronze Bomber” Wilder (35-0, 34 KOs) in their fight on January 16th on Showtime at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York. Dibella believes that Szpilka will go after the 6’7” Wilder in the same way that Polish cruiserweight Krzysztof] Glowacki tore into long-time WBO cruiserweight Marco Huck to score an 11th round knockout last August to win the WBO title. Glowacki and Huck both hit the deck in that fight in one of the most exciting contests of the year thus far.

The 12-round SHOWTIME CHAMPIONSHIP BOXING® main event between the power-punching Wilder (35-0, 34 KOs), of Tuscaloosa, Ala., and Szpilka (20-1, 15 KOs), of Wieliczka, Poland, will be the first heavyweight title fight in Brooklyn since James Jeffries knocked out James Corbett in the 23rd round on May 11, 1900, on Coney Island.

Deontay Wilder (35-0, 34 KOs) will be back in the ring for a voluntary defense on 1/16 against Polish slugger Artur Szpilka (20-1, 15 KOs) in a fight televised by Showtime Championship Boxing from the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York. The opponent isn’t as interesting as some of the names that were mentioned as possibilities like Shannon Briggs, Amir Mansour and Vyachyeslav Glazkov.

WBC heavyweight champion Deontay Wilder has had a really tough time trying to get an opponent for his voluntary defense on January 16th at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York. An opponent that was reportedly close to signing for the Wilder fight, Vyacheslav Glazkov, opted to walk away from the fight and go a much easier route by fighting for the IBF heavyweight title that was stripped from Tyson Fury earlier Tuesday.

Now it seems that 43-year-old Shannon Briggs is the lasted fighter to turn down a title shot against the 6’7” Wilder. According to Dan Rafael, the money wasn’t what they were looking for.

Wilder is set to box another voluntary defence of his title in January, and is indirectly embroiled in the ‘Czar’ Glazkov/IBF/threat-to-strip Fury saga that has been well publicized this week (see previous articles)- a saga that saw [IBF #1] Glazkov passing on a shot at the American WBC titlist in favour of a fight for the [vacant] IBF belt that looks set to be stripped from new lineal champion Tyson Fury, for immediately rematching Wladimir Klitschko as contractually bound, instead of fighting Glazkov.

Emanuel Steward Predicted Fury & Wilder as Future Stars

Just four short months before his untimely death in October 2012, legendary Kronk gym and Hall of Fame trainer, Emanuel Steward, made some very prophetic statements from the Klitschko training base in Austria, as evidenced in a social media video shared by new lineal heavyweight champion Tyson Fury on his twitter account this afternoon.

In the edited two minute clip, from June 2012 and originally published by fightnews.com, Steward – less than a month shy of his 68th birthday and still training Wladimir- sits in an armchair discussing the impact current prospects he has worked with are going to have upon the future scene, referring to Fury as ‘the next big dominant heavyweight’ after the Ukrainian’s time has ended.
