Monte Barrett Blows Away Tye Fields In One Round!

by James Slater: The sky fell in on the heavyweight known as “Big Sky” last night. Boxing on the under-card of the Pacquiao-Diaz clash in Las Vegas, Monte “Two Gunz” Barrett pole axed the touted Tye Fields in less than a minute of action. Thought to be a relatively safe step up for the 6’8″ Fields, Barrett instead proved to be way too much for the untested 33-year-old..

The battle was over almost as soon as it started, and southpaw Fields, now 41-2(37) was ruthlessly exposed as a big guy who simply cannot fight at anything approaching the top level. The 37-year-old Barrett, who put himself in line for at least one more decent payday as he improved to 34-6(20), scored his best win in years.

Coming out fast, the colossal Fields was looking to run right over his man. Immediately going on the back foot, Barrett, at 220 pounds out-weighed by some forty-five pounds, was hurt by a hard left hand to the body. For a few seconds it seemed the smaller man (6’3″ to 6’8″) would get wiped out pretty quick. But then, as he was under attack on the ropes, Barrett unleashed a terrific right hand counter. Hurt badly, Fields was to take three more big rights to the head – the final shot sending him down.

Fields tried to get up to continue, but he’d totally gone and though he just beat the count at about nine, referee Kenny Bayless had no choice but to wave the fight off. The official time was a mere 57 seconds. Barrett, who was justifiably proud of his knockout showing, further displayed his athleticism by treating the fans to an impressive back flip as soon as the fight was stopped.

In scoring such an eye-catching KO on such a big stage, the 37-year-old who has been in with the likes of Joe Mesi, Hasim Rahman and Nikolay Valuev in his time (losing to all three), will have got himself noticed, that’s for sure. And even though beating Fields doesn’t really mean all that much – in the opinion of most critics anyway – fans like to see knockouts. Who knows, Barrett may even get himself some type of title fight off the back of this spectacular win?

As for Fields, the 1st round stoppage he suffered back in his only second year as a pro – when he was KO’d by the little known Jeff Ford – may not have been the fluke his team tried to make out it was. It may seem cruel, but Tye Fields, as nice a guy as he is, was all but eliminated from ever having a future in the top echelon of the heavyweight division last night.
