Skye Nicolson Opens Matchroom-MVP Partnership on August 29

The WBC super bantamweight champion defends against Miyo Yoshida in the first event staged under the new promotional alliance.

Skye Nicolson will defend her WBC super bantamweight title against Miyo Yoshida on August 29 in Birmingham as the first fighter to compete under the new partnership between Matchroom Boxing and Most Valuable Promotions. The bout launches a long-term alliance aimed at delivering more major fights in women’s boxing.

The announcement brings together Eddie Hearn’s global promotional operation and Jake Paul’s rapidly expanding women’s boxing roster. Rather than working against each other, both companies say they will collaborate to create major championship fights and raise the profile of women’s boxing.

Few expected Hearn and Paul to end up in the same corner.

“This is a partnership not many would have seen coming. But it is one that makes perfect sense,” said Matchroom chairman Eddie Hearn.

Hearn believes combining resources gives female fighters greater access to career-defining bouts, pointing to Nicolson’s first defense under the agreement as the blueprint.

“For our female fighters, like WBC World Champion Skye Nicolson, who fights Miyo Yoshida on August 29 in Birmingham, to chase legacy and to fight the best, this new alliance is integral and we are fully committed to working together with MVPW to continue to grow women’s boxing.”

Nicolson, 16-1 (3 KOs), enters the contest after being elevated to WBC champion earlier this year following Ellie Scotney’s decision to vacate the title. The Australian Olympian previously held the WBC featherweight championship and now begins her second reign as a WBC titleholder in a new weight class.

She made it clear where she wants this partnership to lead.

“Women’s boxing is entering a new era, and I want to be right at the centre of it. This partnership with MVP and Matchroom gives me the opportunity to chase legacy, compete in the biggest fights out there, and help continue pushing women’s boxing forward.”

Standing opposite her is one of Japan’s most accomplished champions. Yoshida, 19-5 (1 KO), has claimed world titles in two weight divisions and built a reputation through disciplined footwork, sharp punch selection and composure over championship distance. Since relocating to the United States, she has trained at Brooklyn’s Gleason’s Gym while rebuilding another title run.

She has no intention of arriving as a supporting act.

“Many people see Skye Nicolson as the favorite and I understand why as she is an excellent fighter. But I have dedicated my life to boxing and I am prepared to give everything for this opportunity.”

The alliance will draw plenty of attention. On August 29, the boxing still has to do the talking.
