Oscar De La Hoya Promises Vegas Surprise

Oscar De La Hoya has finally surfaced in Las Vegas after keeping an unusually low profile throughout Ryan Garcia’s fight week with Conor Benn. The Golden Boy promoter posted a short video Friday night promising a surprise when Ryan defends his WBC welterweight title Saturday at T-Mobile Arena.

“Guess who landed in Vegas. See you tomorrow, and boy, do I have a surprise for you,” said De La Hoya on social media.

Oscar looked delighted in the clip, dancing on a balcony with the Las Vegas skyline behind him. The lighthearted video leaves the nature of his surprise open, but his arrival alone is notable after his absence from the major fight week events.

Ryan is Golden Boy’s biggest attraction, yet Zuffa Boxing has taken a prominent role in this event. Dana White has also spoken openly about wanting to sign Ryan, raising questions about how much longer the 28-year-old champion will remain with De La Hoya.

Oscar’s Saturday appearance may be an attempt to remind everyone that Golden Boy is still attached to Ryan’s career. Standing beside his fighter after a victory would give him a visible place in an event where White and Zuffa have received much of the attention.

The timing creates plenty of possibilities. Oscar may have news involving Ryan, another Golden Boy fighter, or a future event. It may also be nothing more than a theatrical entrance designed to draw attention back toward himself after spending the week outside the spotlight.

Ryan’s relationship with Golden Boy has already survived public attacks, a lawsuit, and repeated complaints about his promoter. They repaired enough of that damage to continue working together, but White’s interest provides Ryan with another powerful option.

That makes Oscar’s surprise more interesting than the usual promotional stunt. If Ryan defeats Benn, Golden Boy may soon face a fight of its own to keep the most valuable boxer on its roster.
