Ryan Garcia: Steroids Cannot Save Conor Benn

Ryan Garcia stripped away every shred of polite promotion ahead of Saturday night, reducing Conor Benn to a harsh boxing reality. Chemical enhancements cannot manufacture genuine pedigree. Benn can roll in with all the explosive bulk and laboratory muscle money can buy, but Ryan is convinced none of it fixes the Brit’s fatal technical flaws.

“He could take steroids all he wants. Like I said, he’s not good enough,” Ryan told The Ring. “And, you know, I don’t really care.”

The remark stings because it goes far deeper than a tired PED jab. Ryan is picking at the scab Benn’s handlers have spent years hiding. Benn skipped the deep amateur furnace where elite boxers learn their craft. His entire run has been a promotional exercise in manufactured hype, beating up handpicked veterans while relying purely on wild aggression and raw physical horsepower.

Muscle bulk does not track Ryan’s lightning hand speed. It will not teach Benn how to safely close distance without running face-first into Ryan’s pet left hook, nor will it provide an alternate strategy once the initial charge gets blown apart. Benn simply lacks the ring miles to solve an opponent he cannot physically bully.

Dropping back down to 147 pounds makes the assignment completely absurd. Benn has not seen the welterweight limit since April 2022. He spent recent years living comfortably up at middleweight against Chris Eubank Jr. and hanging around 150 against Regis Prograis.

Squeezing that thickened frame down to a division abandoned four years ago is a recipe for physical ruin. Strip away that much mass, and you strip away punch resistance, snap, and stamina. Ryan might be facing an opponent already hollowed out by the scale before the first bell even rings.

Ryan is hardly unbeatable. He gets lazy against the ropes, forgets defense exists, and relies almost exclusively on one weapon. Benn’s lone prayer is turning this into an immediate bar fight before his depleted gas tank catches fire. His assessment remains dead accurate. Chemical help cannot teach a novice how to box, and it will not put water back into a withered frame on fight night. Benn is completely out of his technical depth.
