Ryan Garcia says he wants Conor Benn next and is targeting an August welterweight title fight. With Benn holding the WBC No. 1 spot, the matchup has a clear path if terms are agreed.

“I can’t wait, man. It’s going to be August. Nobody else. I only want Conor,” said Ryan to Fight Hub TV.

That is the clearest sign yet that Garcia sees Benn as the next business move and the next fight. Benn already holds the #1 WBC ranking at welterweight, which gives the matchup an easy route if terms can be agreed.

It basically looks like vulture behavior to a lot of analysts right now. Ryan is jumping on Benn the second he looked vulnerable, which is a classic move for a fighter trying to maximize profit while minimizing risk.

Here is the breakdown of why this feels like Ryan is “scavenging” rather than seeking the best challenge:

Benn just went 10 hard rounds with Regis Prograis on April 11. While Benn got the win, he looked human. Prograis was 37, reportedly injured, and coming off a string of poor performances, yet he still managed to cut Benn over both eyes and land clean shots.

Ryan and Shakur Stevenson were both on social media immediately, basically calling Benn “food.” Ryan specifically noted that Benn’s power didn’t seem to carry to the higher weight, which is likely why he’s suddenly so eager to “eat him up” in August.

By locking in Benn, Ryan conveniently side-steps three much more dangerous problems against Shakur, Devin Haney, and Rolly Romero.

The business side of this is transparent. Benn just signed a massive 5-fight deal with Zuffa Boxing. Ryan knows that a fight with Benn would have a massive multi-million dollar gate and a huge UK pay-per-view audience. The WBC 147-lb belt that would be on the line for the fight is secondary to the money it brings in for Ryan.

It’s the easy route because Benn is the WBC #1 mandatory. Ryan can claim he’s “just following the rules” while actually picking the guy he thinks he can knock out the easiest.

Ryan is already calling his shot, saying he’ll stop Benn in round 6 or 7. He’s counting on Benn’s aggressive style being a perfect target for his left hook, especially if Benn is drained from dropping back down to the 147-pound limit.
