Floyd Mayweather Jr. moved to 44-0 on May 4th with a convincing points win over Robert Guerrero (31-2-1) in front of a sold-out MGM Grand Garden Arena. Immediately the boxing community turned its attention to September 14th. Pundits, fighters and fans took to twitter and various internet forums to debate potential opponents for Floyd’s second fight of 2013. Devon Alexander and Amir Khan featured heavily in this global debate however one name clearly stood out from the rest.
“I chose my opponent for September 14 and it’s Canelo Alvarez. I’m giving the fans what they want. It will be at the MGM Grand”, tweeted Mayweather. Incredibly this message has received over 36,500 retweets, a modern gauge of fan approval.
This fight with ‘Canelo’ will represent the first time in six years that the current WBC welterweight champion will have contested two bouts in the same year. In 2007 Floyd scored victories over both Oscar De La Hoya and Ricky Hatton.
Together Mayweather and Alvarez bring an unprecedented fight tally of 86-0 to the ring. With Floyd an eight-time world champion and Canelo the current unified light middleweight belt holder, it promises to be an epic encounter between two undefeated champions.
The highly anticipated mega-fight will be fought at 152lbs for the WBC light middleweight, WBA Super World light middleweight and Ring Magazine light middleweight titles.
In contrast to his last fight which had no press tour, Mayweather Vs. Canelo will incorporate a phenomenal 11 city, 2 country press journey commencing on Monday June 24 at 3.00pm ET Times Square, New York.
