Paulie Malignaggi vs. Adrien Boner: Epilogue

malig56Earlier during Fight week, Floyd Mayweather Sr was asked about the comparisons being made between Floyd Jr and Adrien Broner, to these Floyd Sr responded ‘Broner gets hit too much’. Fast forwarding to the fight Saturday night, it was evident Malignagi’s gameplan was to outwork Broner who’s known as a conservative puncher in the Mayweather mold. Not a big puncher Malignaggi who’s 30+ fights have recorded only 7 KO’s, the Brooklyn natives best chance of winning would be his toughness and workrate.

As the fight progressed, early rounds that Malignaggi was able to put in the bank with a high activity rate were replaced during the middle rounds with Broner’s pinpoint power punching capturing rounds for the 135lb champ. Paulie though losing was still able to land on Broner but with limited effect. In the end the fight was a very fan friendly, exciting contest and a rematch is probably in order.

Broner playing the role of villain in homage to his mentor Floyd Mayweather Jr, followed thru on this alter ego to dig his spurs into Malignaggi’s side during his post-fight interview. Paulie wasn’t expecting this and was visibly bothered by Broner’s continued trash talk regarding a common female friend. It was a classless dig, but not unexpected from the publicity hogging Broner who wants to follow in Mayweather’s shoes. Broner hopes to duplicate Mayweather’s PPV success, due to the fact that many buyers purchase his fights to see him lose.

In the aftermath of Malignaggi’s split decision loss to Adrien Broner (which should’ve been unanimous), the veteran Paulie FAILED miserably during his own postfight interview to rise above the trash talk and negativity that enveloped the fight, insinuating that Broner’s victory was based on entitlement rather than Broner legitimately defeating him. As quick witted as Paulie is, he didn’t capitalize on what turned out to be a very competitive and exciting fight by DEMANDING a REMATCH, which would’ve probably been granted guaranteeing him another $1M+ payday.
