David Avanesyan Says Terence Crawford Hits Harder Than Jaron Ennis

David Avanesyan believes Terence Crawford punched harder than Jaron “Boots” Ennis after suffering stoppage losses against both fighters. Trainer Carl Greaves revealed that Avanesyan viewed Crawford as the heavier puncher while describing Ennis as faster, sharper, and more active during exchanges.

Avanesyan was stopped in the sixth round by Crawford in December 2022 during a defense of Crawford’s WBO welterweight title. Around 19 months later, he was halted in the fifth round by Ennis in Philadelphia.

Carl Greaves revealed what Avanesyan told him while discussing the difference in power between the two fighters.

“I think that Crawford is a heavier-handed fighter. I was talking to David and he said that Crawford hits harder but that ‘Boots’ Ennis was a bit sharper and busier,” Greaves told BoxingScene.

“Then you take into consideration that when David fought Crawford, the whole six rounds he was in there with him he had dodgy gloves. When he came out of the ring afterwards, he said he’d never had pain or lumps on his head like it.”

Questions surrounded the gloves Crawford used against Avanesyan after the fight, with Everlast later acknowledging that the pair came from a defective batch of leather.

Avanesyan had entered the Crawford fight after scoring a sixth-round knockout of Josh Kelly. Following the loss to Crawford, he fought only once before returning against Ennis in July 2024.

Ennis later unified titles at welterweight before moving to 154 pounds, where he stopped Uisma Lima in the opening round earlier this month. Crawford later became the undisputed champion with his victory over Errol Spence Jr in July 2023.
