Dave Allen Drops Over 20 Pounds Ahead Of Filip Hrgovic Clash

Allen’s slimmer weigh-in sparked reaction online as Don Charles revealed the heavyweight must force a high pace against Hrgovic

Dave Allen weighed in more than 20 pounds lighter Friday ahead of his heavyweight fight with Filip Hrgovic, signaling a far more aggressive approach for the biggest fight of his career. Allen came in at 248.8 pounds in Doncaster, while trainer Don Charles later said the British heavyweight must push a high pace and avoid giving Hrgovic time to settle.

Hrgovic weighed 248 1/4 pounds, close to the same weight he has carried for most of his recent fights.

“I’ve just ate less chocolate, less sweets,” Allen said.

“People talk about sacrifice but I’m very fortunate really. I spend a lot of time with my family, my kids and I box for a living. Everyone in here doing 9-5, that’s a sacrifice.

“It would be unfair to me to talk about sacrifice. I live my dream every day. Sometimes in the gym it’s hard, sometimes I want to eat stuff, but I’m gonna walk out to 10,000 people in Doncaster against one of the best heavyweights in the world.”

Trainer Don Charles believes Allen’s lighter weight points directly to the strategy his team plans to use against Hrgovic.

“Dave Allen has trimmed down in weight,” Spencer Oliver said during a talkSport Boxing discussion about the fight.

“What does that tell you? He is gonna go phase one, phase two.”

Charles agreed and said Allen cannot afford to allow Hrgovic time to settle into the fight.

“Dave has to set a hot pace,” Charles said.

“He can’t be lazy.”

Charles also argued that Allen has a better chance than many people believe, despite Hrgovic entering the fight as a heavy betting favorite.

“Dave is better than his record,” Charles said.

“He’s good enough.”

Simon Jordan later reacted to Charles backing Allen to win the fight by stoppage.

“I’m going to replay it back to you next time you come in the studio,” Jordan said after hearing the prediction.
