Frank Warren Reveals Fabio Wardley Chose Earlier Rematch

Boxing 24/7 Wire - 10/19/2026 - Comments

Frank Warren wanted Fabio Wardley to wait until next year for a rematch with Daniel Dubois, but Wardley’s camp chose to trigger their contractual clause right away.

That revelation has reignited debate over Wardley’s rapid return, especially after Dubois stopped him in round two at London’s O2 Arena. Wardley wanted redemption quickly. Instead, he walked away with another defeat plus serious questions about his future.

“We didn’t push or press him to go into the rematch. That was in the clause in his contract, and they called it. That was their call,” Warren told talkSPORT. “I would have done it for next year, but that was their choice.”

Pushing this beatdown to 2027 would not have magically produced a different fighter. Dubois has a fundamental power and durability advantage that extra months on the calendar can’t fix.

When a fighter gets blitzed the way Wardley did, the calendar is irrelevant. Dubois went on the offensive right from the opening bell, trapped him along the ropes, and let his hands go with bad intentions. Wardley had zero answers. Shelled up, absorbing flush punishment, and throwing barely a handful of retaliatory shots, he looked completely overwhelmed by the sheer velocity and power of Dubois’s punches. That is not ring rust or a rushed camp.

To turn back an assault like that, Wardley needed to stand his ground, punch with him, and make Dubois pay for walking in recklessly. Instead, Wardley proved he did not possess the ruggedness to survive the pocket against a legitimate world-class puncher determined to take him out early.

Giving Wardley six or twelve more months would just mean Dubois corners him in round one for the same result. Wardley has white-collar roots and plenty of heart, but Dubois operated on an entirely different level of brutality Saturday night. When the gap in punch power is that vast, waiting until 2027 is just delaying the inevitable hospital visit.

Nobody ever doubted Wardley’s bravery. The real concern centered on whether his corner could prevent another punishing loss.

Warren expects Wardley will rest until next year, emphasizing that the fighter enjoys complete financial security without pressure to step back into the ring. Wardley needs a structured recovery schedule.
