Adrien Broner Calls Out Ashley Theophane Following Title Win

After his world title winning effort over Khabib Allakhverdiev at the weekend, capturing the WBA (sup) 140 lb strap, Adrien Broner has called out British “Money Team” member, Ashley Theophane (39-6-1, 11ko).

Broner captured his 4th divisional world title with the 12th round stoppage of the relatively inactive Allakhverdiev, to the chagrin of many, maneuvering into title contention despite coming off a losing effort against Ohioian rival Shawn Porter back in June.

Broner controlled the fight and attributed his performance to a change in attitude, refusing to speak to the media in the build up in a bid to show a new, mature side, although with his post-fight talk, he showed no desire to be matched tough for his first defence, strangely calling out the 35 yr old Brit, who has always seemed a rather odd inclusion in the Mayweather set-up.

Referencing mentor and “big bro,” Floyd Mayweather, Broner said after the Allakhverdiev win;

“I’m going to fight who I want to fight and when I want to fight them. You know, they say my big bro, the one, the only Floyd Mayweather, he say he got a fighter that he feels like he can beat me.

“I think his name is Ashley, but if that is true, this is what you do, big bro, because bosses talk to bosses. You put Ashley on one of your private jets, bring him to come see me.”

Theophane, who is a former British champion at 140lbs, dropping the title to Darren Hamilton in 2012, appears to be up for the fight, although Mayweather Promotions CEO, Leonard Ellerbe could only tweet a simple, “LOL” at the suggestion, and the fight is hardly one that could be deemed relevant or of interest in America or the UK.

Theophane boxed on the Mayweather/Berto bill last month, securing a 10 round UD over the unheralded former Berto opponent, Steve Upshaw Chambers.
