The fight was halted by Peterson’s trainer Barry Hunter at the start of round 8. Peterson was too beaten up for Hunter to allow the fight to continue.

Heavyweight World Champion Deontay Wilder and Welterweight World Champions Keith Thurman and Errol Spence Jr. met with the media on Saturday at Barclays Center to discuss their upcoming bouts and expected 2018 campaigns.

Wilder will defend his WBC belt on Nov. 4 against mandatory challenger Bermane Stiverne live on SHOWTIME from Barclays Center in a Premier Boxing Champions event. Thurman announced he expects to return in early 2018 in his first bout since unifying the division and subsequent surgery.

IBF welterweight ruler Errol Spence Junior will make the first defence of his title against tough and experienced contender, former 140 pound titlist Lamont Peterson, so reports RingTV.com – the fight set for January 13 at Barclays Centre in New York, the fight to go out on Showtime.

Unbeaten southpaw Spence, 22-0(19) snatched the belt from Kell Brook in Sheffield back in May, stopping the defending champ in the eleventh-round of a good fight. Now, after what seems like quite a stretch of time, the Texan finally has his first title challenger within reach. Spence wants the big fights but first comes the capable Peterson, 35-3-1(17).

It’s arguably the biggest welterweight unification fight since Curry-McCrory, and fans are desperate to see it: Keith Thurman, WBA/WBC ruler, against Errol Spence, the IBF champ.

In the opinion of some good judges, the unbeaten Spence has already proven himself as the best 147 pounder in the sport today; others need further proof. And the gifted southpaw who relieved the long-reigning Kell Brook of his IBF belt in May of this year is fully intending on providing this proof. We await Spence’s next fight, his first defence, but word is, it is likely for January; perhaps against Lamont Peterson. Thurman is set to return to the ring in January himself, having fully healed during his latest layoff.
