Matthysse didn’t look much bigger than Dallas Jr … It wasn’t Chavez looking like a Heavyweight—and Martinez looking like a Jr. Middleweight… Not at all.

Often they’ll ask you to step on a scale just before a fight—and you’re already wrapped up with your gloves taped on, your shoes on, your protector on, trunks on, etc … All that gear plus all the carbs, grains, and vegetables they make you eat since the weightin—plus the tons of fruit juices you drank with added salts, sodium citrate, monopotassium phosphates, electrolytes etc that your cardio trainer blends up for you. With all that and your boxing duds on you can weigh 20 pounds more—even though you’re not an ounce bigger than you were at the weighin … If you have to go 12 murderous rounds and they strip you naked and weigh you before you’ve had a drink—that’s what you really weigh.

So now we know why Mattheysse won. When will a fair fight, where both combatants weigh relatively the same on fight night, ever take place? If this is considered normal and not out of the ordinary or perfectly acceptable, then any fighter from any weight division can fight any other fighter from any other weight division. What would be the difference? If the difference in their weights is more than 13 pounds then it’s no longer a fair fight. Gatti- Gamache highlights the risks of such a discrepancy. With this said, how truly impressive then was Matthyse? Perhaps not much.

It will never happen, but if fighters weighed in on the day of the fight, the two boxers would be approximately the same size. Today, that is no longer a given. Yes, the science is available to all but there are, like Chavez, extreme cases and dangerous mis-matches like Gatti and Gamache.
