Chargin: Warren never offered Shumenov Feb. 25 Unification fight vs. Cleverly; Big things expected from Hatton Promotions in 2012

Beibut ShumenovLAS VEGAS (January 3, 2012) – Hall of Fame promoter Don Chargin, advisor for World Boxing Association (“WBA”) and International Boxing Association (“IBA”) light heavyweight World champion Beibut Shumenov, has responded to a press release issued by Frank Warren Promotions that claimed Shumenov turned down a unification offer to fight World Boxing Organization (“WBO”) titlist Nathan Cleverly.

The press release announced that Cleverly will be defending his WBO title February 25 against Tommy Karpency in Wales. It also claimed: An offer went to WBA title-holder Beibut Shumenov to face Cleverly, but he said he would not be ready in time – although it could happen later this year.

Back in November, Chargin reached out to Warren, after reading stories that Cleverly was interested in a unification fight against Beibut. Chargin spoke twice to Warren’s matchmaker, Dean Powell, but Don didn’t hear back until he received an email yesterday.

“I thought that it was strange to get an email just yesterday asking what it would take to get Beibut to come to the UK, especially where we had been talking by phone, and they never responded to our offer weeks ago for Cleverly to fight Beibut in Las Vegas,” Chargin said. “The next day they announce a fight between Cleverly and Karpency? The truth of the matter is Beibut never turned down any fight against Cleverly because they didn’t make an offer to us. We offered them a fight against Shumenov in Las Vegas and they never even responded to that offer, which, to me, means they turned it down. To say Beibut wouldn’t be ready in time to fight Cleverly in two months is quite amusing. Beibut’s been ready to unify since he first won the WBA title. I am terribly disappointed that they would make false statements like that.”

Shumenov (12-1, 8 KOs), a 2004 Kazakhstan Olympian, set a light heavyweight record for capturing a world title in the fewest career fights, 10, when (Jan. 29, 2010) he won a 12-round decision against Gabriel Campillo in Las Vegas. In three successful world title defenses, Shumenov won a unanimous 12-round decision versus No. 1 mandatory challenger and previously undefeated Viacheslav Uzelkov (UDEC12), followed by a six-round knockout of three-time world champion William Joppy (KO6), and then his victory last July by ninth-round TKO versus three-time world title challenger Danny Santiago.

In only 13 pro fights, Beibut has defeated four world champions (Campillo, Joppy, Byron Mitchell and Montell Griffin), as well as three world title challengers (Uzelkov, Santiago and Epifanio Mendoza

HATTON PROMOTIONS READY FOR TITLE WINNING 2012

HATTON Promotions proved themselves among the world’s top promotional boxing organisations in 2011, and are expecting even bigger success this year from their growing stable of boxers.

Hatton Promotions proud champions are Gary Buckland (British super-featherweight champion), Anthony Crolla (British lightweight), Craig Lyon (English bantamweight), Rendall Munroe (WBA international super-bantamweight), Joe Murray (IBF youth featherweight), Martin Murray (British and Commonwealth middleweight), Scott Quigg (British and WBA intercontinental super-bantamweight), Sergey Rabchenko (WBA intercontinental light-middleweight), Ashley Theophane (British light-welterweight champion) and Denton Vassell (Commonwealth welterweight).

But that is just part of the 2011 story as Matthew Hatton and Ryan Rhodes challenged Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez for the WBC light-middleweight crown, and Martin Murray faced WBA super world middleweight champion Felix Sturm.

All three did British boxing proud, and Murray was on the wrong end of a hotly disputed decision in Germany earlier last month. Hatton Promotions are working to earn him a return.

Matthew could face Kell Brook and Ryan has been nominated to meet Hatton Promotions stable-mate Rabchenko for the vacant European crown.

Hatton Promotions President Ricky Hatton said: “2011 was a great year for Hatton Promotions, boasting five British champions domestically.

“At European level we were awarded the crown of European Promoter of the Year, and on the world stage we secured world title shots for Ryan, Matthew and Martin.

“This is a fabulous achievement which has been reached in just three short years.

“With respect to our domestic promotional rivals, to have achieved these goals bearing in mind we have been in existence for a fraction of the time shows British boxing can expect big things from us in 2012.”

Hatton Promotions are looking to have their first world champion this year.

There are real hopes that Crolla, Hatton, Munroe (now boxing at bantamweight), Martin Murray, Rabchenko, Quigg or Theophane can mix with the elite over the next 12 months.

Hatton Promotions reputation for building fighters is growing with the unbeaten hopefuls in the camp including Matty Askin, Tom Doran, Adam Etches, Scott Jenkins, Adam Little, Joe Murray and Richard Towers.

Our next show takes place in the Premier Suite at Bolton’s Reebok Stadium on Saturday February 4 where Quigg defends his British title against Jamie Arthur. Among those fighting on the undercard are Munroe and Joe Murray.

On March 24 we return to Ponds Forge Arena, Sheffield when Buckland makes the first defence of his British crown.

New Year Outing For Prizefighter Star George Jupp, Faces Dan Naylor on the 13th Jan

Choi Tseveenpurev may have won the Prizefighter-Featherweights tournament back in October, but it was without doubt his semifinal opponent, 20 year old ‘Saint’ George Jupp, that stole the limelight – and the plaudits, for his sensational performance against the twice his age two-time World Champion.

The Belvedere youngster showed a maturity that belied his tender years as he traded with the Mongolian Warrior, matching him punch for punch throughout, only to lose out on a place in the final by the slimmest of margins.

Jupp’s disappointment, of not making the final and potentially winning the £32K prize money, was short lived as within days Francis and George Warren signed him to a promotional contract with their Queensberry Promotions organization.

To complete his joy, the Warren brothers have ‘Saint’ George making his maiden outing, under their promotional banner, on the undercard of fellow TRAD TKO Boxing Gym and Queensberry Promotions team mate Leon ‘Solid’ Williams’ first defense of his British Cruiserweight title, against Shane McPhilbin, at York Hall in Bethnal Green, London, on Friday, 13th January.

Following a sparring session, with Super Bantamweight Commonwealth Champ Carl Frampton, yesterday Jupp spoke briefly about the Choi battle, “Yeah, it was a close fight, I couldn’t really scream about the decision as it could have gone either way.

If ten people watched it, five thought I won and five thought he won.

I thought it was a good fight and I take a lot of confidence from that, I mean he’s a two time World Champion and there’s no one at my level that’s going to have done that.”

before moving onto discuss the upcoming bout against Dan Naylor, “I’ve seen a few video’s of Dan, he’s quite a slick southpaw. I’m glad I’m fighting someone like him so I can show my skills to full effect.

He’s in your face, unlike some other opponents, which suits me and my style of fighting.

I keep doing what I’m doing, hopefully this six rounder goes OK and I get a few rounds under my belt.

It’s important to get a couple of six rounders under my belt as hopefully within the next twelve months or so I’ll then be able to get in position for a shot at the Southern Area title.

Saying that I’ll keep looking at each fight as gaining more experience, I will never look past any opponent as each fight is an important part of my learning curve.

It’s hard not to think of titles as we’re doing really well here at the TRAD TKO at the moment, we have had so many Champions over the past year, I think it’s five or six.

That’s why I’m really glad to be fighting on this show, as one of our British Champions, Leon Williams, is headlining.

I can’t wait, I’ve been training hard all over Christmas, been getting some good sparring with Michael Maguire, he’s lighter than me and he’s so good technically he’s hard work. If you can catch him with a clean punch you can catch anyone.

Also been sparring with Juris (Varuskins), he’s quite a tough kid, he pushes you for every round, and Danny (Connor), he’s a bit heavier than me, a bit of an awkward type and of course today was sparring Carl (Frampton), he’s already a champion so very much on top of his game. So I’m getting the best of all worlds, sparring like, with all the different styles.

I am really happy with the way the training and sparring has been going and I’m really looking forward to the 13th.”

‘Saint’ George Jupp, against Dan Naylor, features on the undercard of Leon ‘Solid’ Williams versus Shane McPhilbin for the British Cruiserweight title headlines Francis and George Warren’s Queensberry Promotions first event of the New Year, which takes place at York Hall, Bethnal Green, London, on Friday 13th January 2012 and broadcast live on BoxNation (Sky platform Channel 456 & Virgin 546)
