Nathan Cleverly says the Celtic nations will have cause for double celebration next Saturday. Scotland is already buzzing after Ricky Burns lifted the WBO World Super-Featherweight title against Roman Martinez in Glasgow. And Cleverly has vowed to continue the Celtic revival by destroying Karo Murat in Birmingham. The fight is an eliminator for the WBO World Light-Heavyweight title, and Cleverly says he has been inspired by Burns’ performance against Martinez. “Ricky’s win was a great boost for British boxing, and I’d like to congratulate him,” said proud Welshman Cleverly..
“I fight half as well against Murat I’ll be very happy.
“Boxing in Wales, Scotland and Ireland has always been strong, and it is definitely on the up at the moment.
“I’m going to follow up Burns’ win with another barnstorming victory.
“It was good to see Scotland celebrating at the weekend, and Wales will be partying too after I take a step closer to the world title.
“Murat is definitely in for a shock when we meet, and I can’t see how he is going to last the distance with me.”
Cleverly’s fight against Murat forms part of Frank Warren’s huge Magnificent Seven show at the LG Arena, live on Sky Box Office.

Well Done Ricky
Elaine Smith MSP had lodged a Parliamentary Motion to congratulate the new WBO super-featherweight World Champion, Ricky Burns

Burns, 27, took the title with a unanimous decision after 12 gruelling rounds in front of a packed arena.
Elaine said:
“Ricky is a hugely popular figure in Coatbridge and his world title fight had captured the attention of the entire town”
“He displayed fantastic strength and determination to come back and dominate the fight after being on the canvas in the first round”
“I was delighted to see he had so much support from Coatbridge and surrounding areas, being spurred on by an enthusiastic and partisan support”
“Ricky is a hero in Coatbridge and a fantastic example to our young people of what they can achieve given hard work and determination.”
“We can all be extremely proud of Scotland’s latest boxing World Champion and I am delighted that the Scottish Parliament has thrown its support behind Ricky.”
MALONEY: BURNS IS AN EXAMPLE TO BOOTH
FRANK MALONEY believes Jason Booth should take encouragement from Ricky Burns world title triumph.
The Scot caused a big upset in Glasgow on Saturday night taking the WBO super-featherweight title from Rocky Martinez.
Booth (35-5) challenges Canadian Steve Molitor (32-1) for the IBF super-bantamweight championship at Rainton Meadows Arena, Houghton-le-Spring on Saturday night (11th Sept) and like Burns will start a huge underdog.
Booth’s promoter Frank Maloney said: “Jason should look at what Ricky has done and he will know it is not an impossible dream.
“Ricky showed incredible heart and an amazing will to win against Martinez. If Jason does the same there will be another major upset.
“I promoted the fight when Ricky lost to one of my men, Carl Johanneson and back then I wouldn’t ever have said he would become a world champion.
“Jason must take heart from what he has achieved and remember that when he steps into the ring on Saturday night.”
In the chief supporting bout to, British featherweight champion Martin Lindsay (16-0) boxes a non-title eight rounder Kenyan southpaw David Kiilu (33-10-2)
Local stars in action include Tony Jeffries (7-0-1), Jon Lewis Dickinson (8-1), Travis Dickinson (6-0), Trevor Crewe (2-2), Gary Fox (2-0), Kirk Goodings (4-0), Martin Ward (8-0), George Watson (8-1-2), and debutant Glen Foot.
