News: Daniel Edouard; Edwin Rodriguez; Danny O’Connor

Daniel “The Haitian Sensation” Edouard (22-2-2 KOs 13) the current WBA Fedelatin Middleweight Champion adds a WBO #15 middleweight ranking to his growing list of accomplishments. Edouard, also ranked WBA #8 at middleweight and WBC #11 at super welterweight, was informed about the new ranking recently. “It is certainly an honor. You work hard every day in hopes of climbing up the ladder towards a title shot. I truly feel blessed..”

Edouard is in preparation for a defense of his WBA Fedelatin title in Panama City, Panama at the Arena Roberto Duran against Nicaraguan fighter Wilmer Gonzalez on October 9.

“I am excited about going back to Panama. The boxing fans there are great and they know their boxing! They have a rich boxing history with legends such as Roberto Duran and Eusebio Pedroza so you have to be ready to put on a great show when you’re fighting on Panama’s soil.”

When asked about his boxing future beyond his Panama fight and who he would like to face next Edouard went on to say, “I am focused on Gonzalez. One fight at a time. Win this fight first then I’ll think about who is next. Square Ring will ultimately make a good solid decision as to who I fight next, when that fight takes place and where that fight takes place. My job is to fight the fighter that is in front of me so that is what I am focused on right now.”

The October 9 Boxing card is promoted by Premium Boxing Promotions and will feature 12 bouts.

Middleweight prospect Edwin Rodriguez headlining “Saturday Afternoon Special”

Olympian Demetrius Andrade in Twin River co-feature

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (Sept. 24, 2009) – Undefeated prospect Edwin “La Bomba” Rodriguez has been added to the loaded “Saturday Afternoon Special” as the headliner in an 8-round middleweight match.

U.S. Olympian Demetrius “The Cape Verdean Assassin” Andrade and former University of Rhode Island football player, Vladine Biosse, also will be featured on a rare matinee pro boxing show, “Saturday Afternoon Special,” Oct. 3 at 2 p.m. the Twin River Event Center in Lincoln, R.I.

“Saturday Afternoon Special” is presented by Jimmy Burchfield’s Classic Entertainment and Sports Inc. (CES), in association with Twin River.

Rodriguez (11-0, 8 KOs) was supposed to fight last night in New Hampshire, but his opponent pulled out and now “La Bomba” will explode on Rhode Island against an opponent to be determined.

“The other night I got a call from two friends, Larry Army and Lou DiBella, asking if I could help them out because Edwin’s fight had fallen out,” CES president Burchfield explained. “He had been training 5-6 weeks. I didn’t hesitate. His manager, Larry Army, in two days got a front page story about Edwin fighting on our card in the Worcester newspaper. He has developed a bond with his trainer, Peter Manfredo, Sr., and has a great promoter, Lou DiBella. Edwin has all of the ingredients to be world champion. After the deal was finalized, the first call I got was from Edwin, who thanked me for putting him on the card. I’m proud – all of the CES fighters are proud – to have Edwin fighting in the October 3rd main event.”

“It doesn’t bother me at all,” Rodriguez said about fighting on a different card. “One minute I was fighting, then I wasn’t, and this is a blessing in disguise. I’m headlining a better card in a better venue. I’ve been training hard to improve because in a year I want to be fighting for a title. I want to fight people who make me a better fighter, instead of fighting [opponents] I put away in a round or two, which will only hold me back from improving and getting me ready for when my title shot comes.”

Andrade, fighting at home again out of Providence, is a former World amateur champion fighting in the 6-round co-feature versus another undefeated prospect, Chris Chatman (3-0, 1 KO). Andrade’s (7-0, 6 KOs) fight will be a 6-rounder, in association with Banner Promotions and Star Boxing.

Providence super middleweight Biosse (3-0, 3 KOs), a 2-time Junior College All-America football player at Dean College, has shown consistent adjustments from the gridiron to the ring and is ahead of the pace with three wins, all by impressive knockouts. The former URI Rams football player faces Tafari Lawton (1-0) in a 4-rounder.

Light welterweight Simeon Dunwell (9-1, 2 KOs) meets David Marquez in a 6-round bout. Also fighting on the undercard in 4-round fights are Hartford junior middleweight David Bauza (1-0, 1 KO) vs. Khristian Geraci (4-6-1, 3 KOs), Hartford light welterweight Edwin Soto (1-0, 1 KO) vs. Darnell James (2-2, 1 KO), Providence light welterweight Jesus Caro (4-0, 4 KOs) vs. Damien Butler (0-1). All boxers are subject to change.

NINE IN A ROW FOR O’CONNOR

JUNIOR WELTERWEIGHT PROSPECT HALTS CAPE IN THREE

HOLLYWOOD, FL, September 24– Irish eyes were smiling Wednesday night at the Verizon Wireless Arena in Manchester, New Hampshire, as undefeated junior welterweight prospect Danny O’Connor improved to 9-0 (3 KOs) with a third round TKO of Patrick Cape.

The victory was the 24-year old O’Connor’s seventh of 2009, making the 2008 US Olympic team alternate one of the most active young fighters in boxing today. The southpaw’s win also showed the continuing maturation of his fight game, as he ended the bout at 1:44 of the third round with a debilitating left uppercut to the body.

O’Connor, a native of Framingham, Massachusetts who is promoted by Seminole Warriors Boxing, is expected back in the ring for more spectacular performances before the end of 2009.
