Scott Gammer Defeats Micky Steeds To Retain British Heavyweight Title

14.10.06 – British Heavyweight Champion Scott Gammer made the first defense of his title last night in front of a packed house at the Afan Lido Sports Centre in Port Talbot,Wales by dominating challenger Micky Steeds of London on a Paul Boyce promotion with Sky Sports televising. The twenty nine year old Welshman from Pembroke Dock proved once again that he remains one of the top men in the country by shutting out Steeds in virtually every exchange of the twelve round contest.

Steeds, of London’s East End, started fast and took advantage of his edge in handspeed to put Gammer on the defensive but very little passed by the Champion’s defense. By the close of the first round, Gammer had stamped his authority via a hurtful bodyshot that shook Steeds to his boots.

Gammer continued his campaign to the midsection of Steeds and the strategy paid off as the challenger’s output dropped with each round going into the middle section of the bout.

The fifth saw the champion go on the defensive and Gammer fielded a sharp body shot from Steeds later in the same round, the only time that the challenger managed to impress his will upon the stronger man.

The next session saw Gammer restart his vicious body assault, wearing Steeds down and reducing the challenger to simply throwing ineffective jabs. Soon the Welshman began to vary his efforts and bloodied the nose of the flagging Steeds.

Somehow the challenger managed to stay upright amid the storm of leather that rained down but was clearly shaken in both the ninth and tenth rounds. By the eleventh Gammer began to box and kept Steeds at arm’s length for the remainder of the bout, cruising to victory by comfortable margins, 120-108 and 118-110 (twice) on the scorecards to retain his British Heavyweight title.

Gammer was initially scheduled to face ex-champion Danny Williams for this bout and will likely meet the unpredictable Brixton man either in December or January.
