Vanes Martirosyan is going to be taking on Jermell Charlo in March to determine a legitimate threat in the super welterweight division. It wouldn’t be surprising if the winner of this fight were to land a super fight somewhere down the line against the likes of Saul Alvarez or a title fight vs someone like Demetrius Andrade or Cornelius Bundrage.
Vanes Martirosyan is an interesting prospect in the fight game. In 37 bouts he has just one defeat – a split decision to strong champion Demetrius Andrade. Since that loss in 2013 he has come back with two impressive performances against good fighters in Mario Lozano and Willie Nelson. Jermell Charlo on the other hand is undefeated and also boasts a recent victory over Mario Lozano. Although Lozano was thoroughly out boxed on both accounts, Martirosyan managed to add a knockdown to make his victory that much more impressive. This fight should be a good pickem affair to add a hot name to the championship picture at 154.
In an interview with FightHype Martirosyan discussed the upcoming bout, he said whilst he respected Charlo, his team and his trainer, come fight night they are enemies. He said that he had spared Charlo in the past and he felt that Charlo would be nervous leading up to this bout. He didn’t talk too much about who got the better of the exchanges when they took the time to spar, but you could tell from his demeanour that he felt confident and seemed to be expecting a victory coming out of this fight.
Interestingly, Vanes also discussed Al Haymon and boxing as a whole during the interview and seemed positive about the way things were going for the sport. I agreed with several of the things he said regarding matchups being made and new fans falling in love with the sport this year. Hopefully it doesn’t stop with Mayweather vs Pacquiao, hopefully the good fights continue to get made and we can return boxing to its glory days.
