Tszyu says time away from Australia drove decision as Errol Spence Jr. fight talks continue
Tim Tszyu has changed trainers and linked up with Jeff Fenech after saying recent camps away from Australia left him unsettled. The move reshapes his preparation as talks for a fight with Errol Spence Jr. continue.
“Was it hard? Yes, of course,” Tszyu said while speaking to Fox Sports. “Why do stuff if it makes you unhappy? I don’t have to second guess. If I believe something now, I just do it.”
Tszyu had been training in Miami under Pedro Diaz, but said long stretches away from home became difficult to manage.
“There was a lot happening in the last camp. In all honesty, I wanted to spend a lot of time here in Australia. I spent a long time away from home,” Tszyu said.
He added that being separated from family and dealing with time differences took a toll.
“It was hard, you don’t talk to your wife, the time difference is crazy. As soon as the fight finished, I knew I needed to stay home to be more present,” he said.
Tszyu has since turned to Fenech, one of Australia’s most respected boxing figures, and believes the move gives him the environment he needs heading into the next stage of his career.
“The comfort that he made me feel was something that I needed,” Tszyu said.
Tszyu said camp has not fully started yet as he waits for a proposed fight with Errol Spence Jr. to be finalized. If that bout is confirmed, the Fenech partnership would begin under immediate pressure against a well-known former champion.
