Teofimo Lopez Says Shakur Stevenson Too Small for 147

Lopez dismisses Stevenson’s size after Devin Haney outlines a 140-to-147 shift among top names

Teofimo Lopez rejected the idea of Shakur Stevenson competing at welterweight, pushing back on Devin Haney’s view that top 140-pound fighters are moving up. Lopez pointed to what he felt in the ring, arguing Stevenson lacks the physical presence for 147.

Devin Haney suggested a coming shift, saying many of the leading fighters at 140 pounds are headed toward 147 and even 154. The idea reflects how quickly the division is thinning at the top, with several names already testing higher weights.

Lopez didn’t go along with it when Stevenson’s name came up.

“I think other than Shakur. He’s too small,” said Teofimo Lopez on InsideRingShow.

Haney didn’t go along with it, pointing out that Stevenson is physically comparable to Lopez, but Teofimo leaned on his own in-ring experience from their fight. His view wasn’t based on appearances or rankings, but how Stevenson felt across from him.

“I kid you not. Despite everything that happened that night in that fight, he felt like a small kid compared to it all. He just felt small,” said Teofimo about Shakur.

That assessment goes with a broader perception around Shakur Stevenson as he continues to climb divisions. While his skill set has translated at each weight so far, questions about physical strength and frame tend to follow him whenever talk shifts to welterweight.

Analyst Max Kellerman added to that point during the exchange, noting that fighters like Lopez, Haney, and Ryan Garcia appear naturally bigger and broader, even before factoring in fight-night weight differences.

Stevenson remains outside the 147-pound picture in any official sense. Still, with Haney and Lopez both talking about moving up, the conversation is already starting to take shape around who can carry their attributes into a division where size becomes harder to manage. Teo made his position clear. He doesn’t see Stevenson as part of that group.
