Teofimo Lopez Named Preferred Target for Ryan Garcia’s Golden Boy Sendoff

Ryan Garcia already knows who he wants next if he defeats Conor Benn on Sept. 12. Rather than pursuing an immediate rematch with Rolly Romero, the WBC welterweight champion wants the winner of the Aug. 22 bout between Teofimo Lopez and Romero to finish his Golden Boy Promotions run.

“I want to win. I want to fight Teofimo, Rolly’s the winner. That’s what I want to end my Golden Boy career with,” said Ryan to Ring Magazine.

“Probably Teofimo. I feel like Teofimo has his number. I think the sparring is going to play a part in it. They’re both going to have a sense of hesitation because of the sparring, but I think Teofimo really believes in himself. He knows what to do to Rolly.”

Garcia believes Teofimo’s confidence gives him an edge in the matchup. He said Lopez appeared uncertain before the proposed Shakur Stevenson fight, but expects a different version against Romero because he feels Lopez already knows the formula for beating him.

Settling the score with Romero remains a secondary concern for the time being. He views avenging the loss as something that can wait while he pursues bigger opportunities.

“Not really, man. That’s not my best. One day, if I can complete a side mission to redeem myself for that or write that wrong, I will. But I feel like I have bigger fish to fry,” said Garcia.

Maintaining a busy schedule stays central to the plan, with Garcia aiming for a December return to log three appearances this year. Handing Benn a defeat remains task number one, yet the blueprint for his final Golden Boy main event is already set.
