Ryan Garcia Wants Boxing’s Crown On The Cheap

Ryan Garcia sounds deluded if he believes he can become the face of boxing through a cheap, superficial run against recognizable but deeply flawed opposition.

“That is on the table for me, to become the face of boxing. I have all the attributes to it,” Ryan told the Stephen A. Smith Sports YouTube channel. “But again, if you’re not on point and if you don’t stay in tune, things can be lost real quick. So, for me, I’ve got to just have tunnel vision, kick ass, and let’s see where we’re at.”

Beating Conor Benn will not establish Ryan as boxing’s leading fighter. Benn has been competing above 147 and is forcing his body back down to a division he may have outgrown. Defeating a drained opponent would prove very little.

Wins over Devin Haney, Teofimo Lopez and Liam Paro would supply belts and famous names, but all three have serious flaws. Cycling through that group at welterweight looks like an inexpensive imitation of greatness rather than the real thing.

The genuine route runs through 154. Ryan would need to beat the top fighters there and perhaps repeat the job at 160. That requires taking risks against naturally larger opponents who cannot be dismissed as undersized light welterweights.

Ryan already possesses fame. He seems to want the highest honor without doing the difficult work that gives it meaning. He already has the fame. Until he risks his celebrity against the elite at junior middleweight, he remains a social media sensation pretending to be a king.
