Dalton Smith’s Disputed Win Complicates Shakur Stevenson Fight

Boxing 24/7 Wire - 10/25/2026 - Comments

Dalton Smith would enter a Shakur Stevenson fight with questions hanging over his last victory, rather than the momentum Eddie Hearn is selling after Saturday night in Sheffield.

Smith kept his WBC light welterweight strap via split decision over Alberto Puello, yet a huge chunk of viewers scored it clearly for the challenger. Plenty of fans see it as nothing more than a hometown gift. That cloud of controversy won’t vanish when Hearn tries to pitch a massive unification against Shakur.

Hearn spun it far differently in his post-fight comments.

“I thought Dalton Smith won a very, very close fight.”

The Matchroom boss went even further, labeling Smith the UK’s pound-for-pound king on the back of his wins over Subriel Matias and Puello. That claim stretches reality thin, especially after a display where Smith struggled to prove he was even the sharper man in the ring.

Still, Hearn tossed Stevenson’s name into the conversation, while floating a few detour bouts first.

“I like the Gary Russell fight. I like the Delgado–Biyarslanov fight. I like the Pitbull fight and picking up the other belts. Maybe before you fight Shakur.”

That leaves Smith with several routes before ever touching Shakur. Hearn wants a massive summer stadium night at Hillsborough, claiming Sheffield Wednesday’s brass is eager to host. So far, though, there is no signed deal or locked opponent.

The real snag comes down to buy rates. Who actually shells out extra cash on DAZN PPV to watch Smith take on Shakur?

A packed Sheffield stadium makes for great television. Turning that into global pay-per-view buys demands international recognition. Smith remains largely unknown to US audiences, and filling a local arena in his hometown does not translate to genuine national drawing power across Britain.

Smith’s appeal is that of a blue-collar fighter who worked through the domestic ranks. Hearn can sell that story, but Saturday’s disputed result makes the next pitch harder. He has also capitalized on an open, transitional 140-pound division.

Taking out Matias won him the hardware. Scuffling past Puello, however, pokes massive holes in Hearn’s claim that Smith and Shakur represent the absolute elite at junior welterweight.

“I’m just saying Shakur and Dalton are one and two at 140. Let’s find out.”

Hardcore fans might debate it, but commercially, Smith enters any rollout dragged down by an ugly scorecard dispute. Holding a belt gives Shakur a reason to look his way. It definitely does not guarantee paying customers at the box office.
