Canelo Alvarez Reacts To Ryan Garcia-Conor Benn Fight Talks

Canelo called Ryan Garcia “very brave” while discussing the dangerous style Conor Benn could bring to a welterweight title fight

Canelo Alvarez believes Ryan Garcia against Conor Benn would be a strong fight, but one phrase from his reaction quickly stood out across boxing. The Mexican star described Garcia as “very brave” for potentially facing Benn, whose pressure-heavy style could create difficult moments at welterweight.

“It’s a good fight. Conor Benn is a good fighter; he throws a lot of punches. He’s very brave. Ryan Garcia is a great fighter too, it’s a good fight,” said Canelo during a media gathering with Seconds Out.

The “very brave” remark immediately caught attention because Benn’s entire style is built around pressure, aggression, and forcing opponents into exchanges. While Benn has technical flaws, he keeps coming forward and rarely gives opponents time to settle.

Ryan has looked uncomfortable in that type of fight before. During his loss to Rolando Rolly Romero in May 2025, Ryan became cautious after being dropped and spent much of the remaining rounds fighting defensively rather than trading back aggressively.

Ryan’s victory over Barrios was a different kind of fight. Barrios gave him room to punch and lacked the power to make him fight cautiously. Ryan was able to land clean left hooks and fight at a pace that suited him.

Benn may present a much more physical problem if the fight happens. However, there are still questions about how much power Benn carries if the bout takes place at the full welterweight limit of 147 pounds.

Against Regis Prograis in their 150-pound catchweight fight, Benn still pressured hard but did not appear to carry the same explosive power he showed earlier in his career. Prograis absorbed heavy shots, stood his ground, and forced Benn into a rough back-and-forth battle.

That performance may have revealed two things at once. Benn can still create problems with his nonstop pressure and aggression, but he also becomes far more vulnerable when opponents refuse to fold under his attack.
