Lennox Lewis Says Retirement Was Hard After Klitschko Win

Former heavyweight champion reveals urge to return but chose discipline after 2003 exit

Lennox Lewis says walking away from boxing after beating Vitali Klitschko in 2003 was difficult. The former heavyweight champion admitted he considered returning but chose to stay retired.

Lewis ended his career as heavyweight champion and never returned, despite regular talk of comeback fights in the years that followed. The former undisputed champion said the urge to fight again stayed with him long after he stepped away.

“Many times I felt like jumping back in the ring,” said Lennox to Sky Sports Boxing. “Focus [and] discipline kept me out.”

Lewis said discipline and perspective were the reasons he never made the mistake many former champions do by returning too late.

By the time he retired, Lewis had already completed one of the stronger heavyweight runs of his era. He avenged his upset loss to Hasim Rahman, stopped Mike Tyson, and closed with the bloody win over Klitschko.

Lewis said even taking a television role with HBO kept boxing close enough to test that decision.

“HBO gave me a job as a commentator, and I was there in front of boxing again, and I was trying to get away from boxing.”

He added that the internal debate ended when he reminded himself there was nothing left to chase.

“I said I’ve done everything already, I don’t need to prove anything anymore.”

Many great heavyweights leave too late and pay for it in the ring. Lewis may have taken punishment in his career, but he made the smartest move at the right time when it ended.

Lewis retired at a time when heavyweights often stayed around too long chasing one more payday. The division still had younger names coming through, including Klitschko, and a return would have meant risking the clean ending he had already secured. Instead, he left with the title still attached to his name.
