Davis admits he pushed for tougher opponents as Top Rank backed rematch story

Keyshawn Davis says he did not want the rematch with Nahir Albright and had pushed for stronger opponents. He pointed to Top Rank’s decision, saying the fight was driven by the storyline rather than his preference.

“I didn’t want this fight. I wanted to fight a better opponent. I wanted Oscar Duarte,” Davis said to Sean Zittel, explaining the preference of who he wanted to fight on May 16th.

He made it clear the matchup is tied more to promotion than preference.
“Top Rank insisted on me fighting Nahir Albright because they love the story. I follow my promotion,” said Davis.

That “story” comes from their first meeting, a controversial result that still hangs over Davis’ record. Even so, he doesn’t view the opponent as the issue. He views the process as out of his hands.

At the same time, Davis didn’t push back on criticism from fans who expected a bigger name.

“I agree. I wanted something more than Nahir Albright,” Keyshawn said.
The explanation is simple: he asked for different fights, didn’t get them, and took what was made.

Still, he isn’t lowering expectations for the performance. Davis said every opponent at this stage should come in confident and prepared, and he expects to separate himself regardless.

“I don’t want nobody to come in there and lay down. Every fight I should fight right now, they should be coming confident.”

So the message from Davis isn’t promotional hype. It’s a reality check. He didn’t choose the opponent, but he’s treating the fight as another step toward forcing the bigger names to engage.
