Oscar De La Hoya’s Benavidez Comparison Doesn’t Hold Up

Former champion draws Chavez parallel, but paths to mainstream success are not the same

Oscar De La Hoya compared David Benavidez to his own rise against Julio César Chávez, but the situations don’t line up. The path that made De La Hoya a crossover star is not the one Benavidez is on.

De La Hoya presented it around identity and acceptance, pointing back to his fights with Julio César Chávez.

“He’s in my position when I fought Chavez. He wants to be accepted, man, from here, from there,” said De La Hoya to Sean Zittel.

“I beat Chavez twice, and I still get a lot of hate from people. Who knows how long it’s going to take him.”

That part lands on the surface. The deeper comparison doesn’t. De La Hoya built his base in the United States first. He presented himself as American, connected across audiences, and his personality carried him into the mainstream.

De La Hoya smiled, he joked, and he made himself easy to support. That wasn’t a small detail. It helped turn him into a crossover star.

Benavidez has taken a different route. He pushes the “Mexican Monster” identity, but he’s largely seen as an American fighter representing his roots rather than someone fully embraced by a Mexican fan base. That creates distance instead of reach.

The fight itself limits the upside. Beating Gilberto Ramirez isn’t the same kind of moment De La Hoya had against Chávez. One was a national symbol at his peak. The other is a respected champion without that same cultural pull, especially in the U.S. A win adds a title. It doesn’t automatically change how the public sees him.

“Maybe it takes his entire career. As long as he tries, that’s what matters the most,” said De La Hoya.

That sounds less like a blueprint and more like a warning. Benavidez is chasing something that doesn’t come with belts. The problem is, the path De La Hoya took to get there isn’t the one he’s on now, and the moment in front of him doesn’t carry the same weight.
