After years of pushing for the fight, Benavidez Sr. now believes Canelo should avoid dangerous opponents late in his career

Jose Benavidez Sr. says he no longer believes Saul “Canelo” Alvarez will ever fight David Benavidez after years of publicly chasing the matchup. The longtime trainer said Alvarez is now at a stage of his career where he should focus on less dangerous opponents instead of high-risk fights.

“No, well, I’m telling the truth. People need to let Canelo rest already,” said Jose Benavidez Sr. to Fight Hub TV.

“Canelo is already in the final stage of his career, I think. Right now, he needs to fight fighters that aren’t very dangerous anymore, so he can keep making money, because at the end of the day, he already did what he had to do.

“I think what Canelo accomplished will also be very difficult for anyone else because he set the standard very high.

“So I think that fight with David Benavidez is impossible. I don’t think it will ever happen.”

The reaction on X was immediate, with many fans treating the comments like an admission that the Benavidez side has finally accepted reality after years of chasing the Alvarez fight. One fan wrote that Jose Sr. “should have gotten the message a long time ago.”

David Benavidez spent years calling for the Alvarez fight during his rise through the super middleweight division, but the matchup never materialized before his eventual move to light heavyweight. Canelo now prepares for his September 12 fight against Christian Mbilli in Saudi Arabia.
