Gennady Golovkin vs Kell Brook at The O2 in London on September 10

In a huge announcement that went out live on Sky Sports news just minutes ago, it was announced how superstar Gennady Golovkin will face Kell Brook on September 10th at The O2 in London. Brook, the IBF welterweight champion, was to have faced WBO welterweight boss Jessie Vargas, but that fight stalled – now we know why. Chris Eubank Junior has not signed a deal to fight GGG, as was expected – with Eubank calling GGG out for some time and Golovkin even signing to take the fight – and now Brook gets the mega-fight himself.

Brook said he “loves a war,” and is fully expecting one on September 10th. Brook, unbeaten at 36-0(25) also said he “wants to be like Sugar Ray Robinson,” who went up the weight classes in search of greatness. If Brook can shock Golovkin, 35-0(32) he will have certainly achieved that. But it looks to be a massive task. This fight, like the recent Canelo Alvarez-Amir Khan fight, has come right out of the blue. In fact, this fight – which will go out live on Sky Box Office – is arguably a better, more evenly matched fight.

Khan does not have the chin and proven durability Brook has, but then again Brook does not have Khan’s super speed. But can Brook go up two weight divisions and succeed where Khan failed (at 155, not full middleweight)? Millions of fans will be tuning in in September to find out, that’s for sure. It’s not clear what Vargas and Eubank Jr will do next now that their big fight chances have fallen apart, but Brook and his fans will not care one bit about that.

Brook had the following to say on the upcoming super-fight:

“When this fight was first offered to me I accepted within minutes. Everyone knows I’m a huge welterweight and I know I will carry my speed and accuracy and even more power through the weights. This is the ultimate fight. You have seen some huge names run from GGG but I am running to him. I’m a special fighter and I will show the world on September 10.”

Needless to say, this fight will indeed be the biggest fight to take place in the UK this year – or for many a year, as Brook himself said.
