Floyd Schofield Calls Out Gervonta Davis for Summer Fight

Unbeaten contender pushes for title shot as Davis weighs return options and possible Cruz rematch

Floyd Schofield is pushing for a summer fight with Gervonta Davis after calling out the WBA lightweight champion on social media. The matchup is not in place, with Davis still linked to a rematch with Isaac Cruz and holding “Champion in Recess” status.

Schofield later said that the fight could land in July or August, though no promoter or network has announced an agreement. The 22-year-old has been aggressive in chasing the matchup.

As the WBA’s top-ranked contender, Schofield has also pushed for a mandatory title shot at Davis, who has not fought since his March 2025 draw against Lamont Roach Jr.

While he is the legitimate WBA #1 contender, there are major obstacles standing in the way of this fight happening this summer. Reliable reports from mid-March 2026 suggest that Gervonta Davis is already in advanced negotiations for a rematch with Isaac “Pitbull” Cruz.

That fight is rumored for 140 pounds, which would leave Schofield waiting on the sidelines.

Following legal issues and a lengthy layoff, the WBA designated Davis as “Champion in Recess” in early 2026. This gives Tank and his team flexibility to take a non-mandatory return fight, like the Cruz rematch, while Schofield holds the #1 spot without a dance partner.

Davis is one of boxing’s biggest attractions and proven at the elite level, while Schofield is younger, unbeaten, and still trying to prove he belongs in that class. It is the kind of fight that could move Schofield overnight if he wins.

Schofield putting Tank’s name out there this directly is a sign he wants the opportunity now, not later. If Davis plans to return this summer, Schofield has made sure his name is in the conversation.

Unless the Isaac Cruz talks collapse entirely, Schofield is likely looking at a late 2026 date at the earliest. For now, he is doing what any smart young contender does: using the champion’s inactivity to build his own profile.
