Armando Resendiz Calls for Canelo Alvarez Fight if Munguia Is Beaten

WBA champion points to Canelo bout as next step but must get through Jaime Munguia first

Armando Resendiz says a fight with Canelo Alvarez is the target if he defeats Jaime Munguia on May 2. The WBA super middleweight champion must first come through a dangerous bout that will decide whether that opportunity moves forward.

Resendiz was asked which opponent would motivate him most beyond the Munguia bout, and he pointed directly to Canelo Alvarez. The Mexican contender said he used to imagine sharing the ring with established stars, and now believes those opportunities are within reach.

If Armando Resendiz can pull off the upset against Jaime Munguia this Saturday, May 2, he becomes the ultimate path of least resistance for Canelo’s planned September return in Saudi Arabia.

“Like I’ve said in other interviews, I dreamed of seeing myself fighting names like Caleb Plant and Jaime Munguia, and now look where I am. I’m about to fight him. Why not against Saul Canelo Alvarez too?” Resendiz said to Fight Hub TV.

For Resendiz, the upcoming fight with Munguia represents the final hurdle between being a contender and becoming a candidate for a massive payday against Saul “Canelo” Alvarez.

Resendiz was recently elevated to full WBA Super Middleweight Champion. Canelo has always been vocal about wanting to hold titles, and the WBA strap is a piece of the puzzle he’d want back.

Unlike WBC champion Chrisitian Mbilli, who is a non-stop puncher, Resendiz is viewed as a more traditional, findable target. While he’s tough, his style allows Canelo to counter-punch and dictate the pace, the exact kind of fight Saul excels in.

The catch, of course, is that Resendiz has a difficult fight on Saturday. Munguia is coming in as a significant favorite for a reason. Even with Munguia’s recent history with the loss to Canelo and that strange positive test situation after the Bruno Surace fight, he’s experienced, heavy-handed, and has much more seasoning at the elite level.

Resendiz has to look like a world-class champion to make the Canelo fight a reality. If he struggles or wins a controversial decision, the marketability for a Canelo fight might dip, and Team Canelo might look toward a UK payday with someone like Hamzah Sheeraz instead.
