Morrell insists he “won” their first fight and wants second bout next

David Morrell says he wants a rematch with David Benavidez after his recent win over Gilberto Ramirez. Morrell lost their first fight but insists the result should be revisited.

“Yeah. First guy. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. 100%,” Morrell said to Fighthype when asked if he still wants the rematch. “Like I want a rematch with him. So, you know. Yeah. Yeah. I won. I won 100%.”

Morrell lost a 12-round unanimous decision to Benavidez last year in a fight that included a knockdown.

He said that he expected Benavidez to beat Ramirez because he had sparred with both fighters in the past.

“I have inspiring with him and Ramirez long time,” Morrell said. “So I know everything.”

Benavidez has recently been linked to possible future fights against Oleksandr Usyk and Jai Opetaia following his move to cruiserweight, but Morrell sounded doubtful about the heavyweight talk.

“Maybe it’s a good business,” Morrell said about a possible Benavidez-Usyk fight. “But that’s crazy. You can’t push money first and your life.”

Morrell also took a shot at Ben Whittaker while discussing the possibility of fighting him in the future.

“It’s good boxing,” Morrell said. “But it’s not like I say wow.”

“You don’t fight the really box,” he added. “You can talk like I’m the best or whatever, Superman or something.”

Whittaker had previously been linked to a fight with Morrell after Morrell’s planned bout with Callum Smith was postponed because of Smith’s rib injury.

Morrell said he still expects the Smith fight to happen later this year.

“Of course. I want this fight,” Morrell said. “This year.”
