Anthony Joshua Taps Peter Fury For Tyson Fight

Anthony Joshua has returned to Ben Davison for his Tyson Fury fight camp and is also taking advice from Peter Fury. That gives Joshua access to two trainers who know his opponent well, although the harder task is turning their knowledge into something he can execute under pressure.

Peter’s involvement is the more intriguing development. He guided his nephew to victory over Wladimir Klitschko, while Davison trained Fury during his comeback and for the first Deontay Wilder fight. Joshua has people available who understand how Fury prepares, listens and responds when a fight becomes uncomfortable.

“I speak to Peter Fury. He’s willing to help me as well,” Joshua told The Ring. “[Peter] has given me some good ideas about our training and our approach, how I can approach this fight and where I can improve.”

Joshua’s comments establish that Peter has offered advice. They do not confirm that he has joined the training team or will work the corner.

For Joshua, the value lies in specifics. General instructions to pressure Fury or attack his body are available to anyone watching footage. Former trainers could offer a better understanding of which movements draw a reaction, when Fury becomes vulnerable, and how to discourage him from controlling the pace.

There are limits to that advantage. Peter prepared a younger Fury for Klitschko, and Davison’s spell came before SugarHill Steward helped develop Fury’s more aggressive approach. Their knowledge needs to be checked against the fighter Joshua will actually face.

Davison’s return also puts their partnership under scrutiny. Joshua’s defeat against Daniel Dubois exposed how quickly a fight can unravel when he gets hurt and cannot regain control. A detailed strategy for Fury must include what happens when Joshua loses the opening exchanges.

That is the real test of this reunion. Joshua can collect useful information from Fury’s former trainers, but his chances depend on making decisions while punches are coming back. Familiarity offers a possible advantage. It does not supply the composure needed to use it.

Fury also jokingly called Davison a “dirty traitor” as he walked past his former trainer in the hallway. The joke reflects an unusual situation: Joshua has reunited with one of Fury’s former coaches while seeking advice from another.

The practical question is how much that familiarity helps Joshua. Davison knows Fury’s habits from working with him, but identifying an opening and getting Joshua to exploit it under pressure are separate challenges.
