Mikkel Kessler is reportedly considering a comeback at 47, more than 13 years after his last fight—and nine years after an earlier return attempt failed to get him back into the ring.
Danish newspaper Ekstra Bladet identifies November 28 as a possible date, with Kalle Sauerland organizing the show, potentially at Brøndby Hallen. An unnamed American is reportedly being considered as the opponent, according to Danish boxing outlet Knock-Out. Neither Kessler’s team nor Sauerland has confirmed the plans.
Kessler announced a comeback in 2017 at 38, but Lyme disease interrupted his preparations. He described the illness at the time:
“I was tired, my muscles were aching, and I was unable to train.”
That proposed return never produced another fight. His last appearance remains the 2013 decision loss to Carl Froch.
The illness does not establish his condition today. It does underline how long this comeback idea has been hanging around. Kessler is now attempting it with another nine years of inactivity behind him.
His eye history also deserves attention. An injury involving double vision forced him out of the Super Six tournament in 2010. He subsequently resumed his career, so that episode cannot establish whether he is medically fit now. Any professional return would need a current assessment.
There is an obvious commercial appeal in bringing a familiar Danish champion back before a home crowd. The sporting justification is harder to identify until the opponent and format are announced.
Kessler’s disciplined jab and combinations depended on timing and control of distance. If he cannot establish that distance against an active opponent, familiar technique alone will offer limited protection.
An exhibition against another retired name would sell nostalgia. A professional contest would invite tougher questions about preparation and matchmaking.
An opponent selected mainly to deliver a comfortable homecoming would prove little. Someone capable of testing Kessler would expose precisely what the long absence leaves uncertain.
