Legendary 50 year old future Hall of Famer and certified freak of nature, Bernard Hopkins (55-7-2, 32ko), is in talks about a potential 2016 bout with Germany’s WBO super-middleweight champion, Arthur Abraham (43-4, 29ko).
Hopkins has made no secret about wishing to capture a world title at 168 lbs, having previously dominated at 160, as well as claiming world 175 lb honours over the course of his 27 year professional career.
After previously mentioning the likes of IBF champ James DeGale as a potential opponent to fulfill this final career ambition, it seems B-Hop has now settled on WBO boss Abraham, with the German’s promoter Kalle Sauerland confirming to ESPN.com that talks are ongoing with Golden Boy Promotions – with whom Hopkins is also a partner in the business, as well as a fighter.
“Absolutely, we are talking daily with Golden Boy,” Sauerland said to Dan Rafael regarding any potential fight, adding that while Golden Boy and Hopkins are keen to travel to Abraham’s backyard, they believe the US to be the most financially viable for the clash – a clash that they see happening around Feb/March time.
Before all this of course, Abraham has a November 21st defence against a TBA opponent to attend to before fulfilling his mandatory obligations – that come in the shape of Top Rank’s red-hot Mexican contender, Gilberto Ramirez and are due around the same time as any mooted Hopkins defence.
In the event the fight between the two veterans is indeed made, then it’s highly likely that Ramirez will be offered a step-aside deal, meaning he waits out his right to fight in the new year, instead facing the winner at a later date.
