Results: Mario Daser destroys Ola Afolabi

Little known, German cruiserweight prospect Mario Daser (13-0, 6 KOs) scored a surprising 3rd round knockout over former 4 time world title challenger Ola Afolabi (22-6-4, 11 KOs) Friday night at the Barclaycard Arena in Hamburg, Germany. Daser, 28, knocked the 37-year-old Afolabi down with a left to the body in the 3rd.

Afolabi took a knee and looked like he was getting ready to get back up. However, just at that moment, Afolabi’s corner came into the ring to have the fight stopped. Referee Frank Michael Maass then halted the fight at that point. The official time of the stoppage was at 2:00 of round 3.

Huck stops Afolabi

Huck stops Afolabi

Coming off of a bad knockout loss, 31-year-old former WBO cruiserweight world champion Marco Huck (39-3-1, 27 KOs) was able to score a 10th round TKO win tonight over IBO cruiserweight champion Ola Afolabi (22-5-4, 11 KOs) at the Gerry Weber Stadium in Halle, Germany. The fight was stopped by referee Jack Reiss after the 10th round had ended.

He halted it because of Afolabi’s left eye being swollen shut. Huck had been hammering Afolabi with right hands to the eye from the very start of the fight. In the 1st round, Huck rammed his head accidentally into the face of Afolabi, and that obviously didn’t help Afolabi’s eye any.

Huck decisions Afolabi; Woge, Gutknecht, Zeuge Win

YouTube video
WBO cruiserweight champion Marco Huck (36-2-1, 25 KO’s) held onto his WBO title tonight with a 12 round majority decision win over Ola Afolabi (19-3-4, 9 KO’s) at the Max Schmeling Halle, Prenzlauer Berg, Berlin, Germany. If you’ve never seen Huck fight before you might have been alarmed at the rabbit punches and low blows that he threw – and got away with – in this fight, but it was actually a pretty tame performance from him in terms of his fouling.

Huck probably should have lost at least one or two points for the fouling. I saw way too many rabbit punches and low blows from Huck and it was surprising the referee failed to do anything about it.

The final judges’ scores were 114-114, 115-113, 117-111.

Afolabi had Huck hurt in the 10th round from some big, big shots. Huck returned the favor in the 12th after blasting Afolabi with a big right hand.

Huck battles Afolabi tonight at the Max Schmeling Halle in Berlin, Germany

20130607_162712WBO cruiserweight champion Marco Huck (35-2-1, 25 KO’s) will be facing Ola Afolabi (19-2-4, 9 KO’s) tonight at the Max Schmeling Halle in Berlin, Germany. This will be third and possibly the final time these two fighters go at unless Afolabi can pull off an upset. He was beaten by Huck in 2009 in losing a 12 round unanimous decision.

In their second fight in 2012, the two fought to a 12 round draw. Afolabi did enough to deserve the decision in the minds of many boxing fans, but he didn’t fight well down the home stretch and that ended up keeping him from getting the victory. Afolabi has been inactive since that fight.

Huck has fought once since then, beating Firat Arslan by a controversial 12 round unanimous decision. Huck didn’t look as strong in that fight as he did against Afolabi and it makes you wonder whether Afolabi took something out of Huck because he wasn’t as strong or as confiderent.

Abel Sanchez: “A third fight between Marco Huck and Ola Afolabi is coming” – Huck/Afolabi 3

Ola Afolabi vs Marco HuckBy Joseph Herron – With the prospect of Denis Lebedev defending his WBA Cruiserweight title against former Heavyweight title challenger “Fast” Eddie Chambers in 2013, many fight scribes and boxing fans alike have been pondering the possibility of potential opponents for WBO Champion Marco Huck.

Trainer Abel Sanchez recently visited “The Pugilist KOrner” and made an intriguing declaration concerning the hard punching German based title holder.

“My fighter, Ola Afolabi, will be facing Marco Huck for a third time on March 2nd in Germany,” insists Big Bear Lake based fight trainer. “I just spoke with Tom Loeffler of K2 Promotions and he stated that the deal is 99.9% completed.”

Seven months ago, the two powerful Cruisers met in the ring for a second time and treated the fight fans in attendance to an entertaining slugfest and fight of the year candidate. Because the competitive sequel ended with an inconclusive majority draw verdict, most die-hard fight fans have been clamoring for third pairing between Huck and Afolabi.

Abel Sanchez is hoping that a third fight will indeed be the charm for Ola Afolabi.

“Both previous fights were very competitive and entertaining. So it just makes sense to do it again. The first bout resulted in a very close win for Huck, and the second was an entertaining majority draw. So hopefully the third bout will finally end in my fighter’s favor.”
