Lucas Browne: “I can’t say I’m surprised that David Price has vacated his titles”

.LUCAS “BIG DADDY” BROWNE says he’s far from shocked with David Price’s decision to vacate the Commonwealth heavyweight title.

The hammer-fisted Aussie won the right to contest the crown when he halted Sheffield giant Richard Towers last month.

He was hoping to square off with Price in early 2014, but the Liverpudlian’s new promoters, Sauerland, yesterday confirmed that he’ll be relinquishing the championship along with his British belt.

Browne keeps busy against old foe Clarence Tillman on December 13 and will be ready for his title opportunity in the New Year.

“I can’t say I’m surprised that Price has vacated to be honest. If Tony Thompson can stop Price, I know I can too,” Lucas, 18-0 (16 KOs), said.

“I have a fight in a weeks’ time that I’m focusing on and I can’t wait to close 2013 with a bang before beginning 2014 with that title fight.

Ricky Hatton: Richard Towers and Lucas Browne will steal the show

YouTube video
Ricky Hatton says Richard Towers and Lucas Browne’s Heavyweight battle will be a showstopper at the Hull Ice Arena on Saturday night, live on Sky Sports.

Towers and Browne clash in an eliminator for the Commonwealth title, and as promoter of both men, ‘The Hitman’ knows exactly what to expect with the stakes so high – and that’s fireworks.

“It’s a great fight, a great clash of styles,” said Hatton. “Being the promoter of both, it’s a little bit upsetting to see them fighting each other. They’re two of the nicest guys you’ll ever meet, but there’s nothing nice about the way they fight.

“This is great opportunity for them both. Lucas has a WBC ranking of 15th, which is a scalp Richard will be after. If you get to 15th in the world, things open up so it’s a big, big fight and it’s going to be very interesting.

Lucas Browne Prepared To Fly To UK After Beating Walker

MDR 160612 Browne v Rasani 19LUCAS “BIG DADDY” BROWNE has said his next fight could be in the UK, after he halted Travis Walker in Melbourne on Thursday (July 25).

The Perth puncher, 34, recovered from a flash knockdown in the first round before taking charge of the fight, dropping the tough American three times, and forcing him to quit on his stool after seven sessions.

The win takes his perfect ledger to 17 wins with 15 stoppages and moves him further up the heavyweight ladder.

Originally, Browne was scheduled to face Sheffield giant Richard Towers, but visa issues meant the fight was scrapped at the eleventh hour.

Now “Big Daddy” says he’s prepared to jet across the world and face the Englishman in his backyard.

Lucas Browne Outpoints James Toney, Kevin Johnson Stops Solomon Haumono

Lucas ‘Big Daddy’ Browne (16-0, 14 KOs) outpointed American legend James ‘Lights Out’ Toney (74-8-3, 45 KOs) over 12 rounds to capture the World Boxing Foundation heavyweight title at the Melbourne Convention & Exhibition Centre this afternoon in Melbourne, Australia.

The first half of the fight saw an interesting contest with the shorter Toney starting positively looking to attack Browne with Browne using his range to set up power shot opportunities. Toney caught Browne with some good right hands in round five while Browne used his jab to great effect to keep Toney at bay for the most part of each round, to rack up points with the judges. Browne’s heavy hands always seemed to look threatening but the Australian respected Toney’s defensive nous and opted against being overly aggressive.

The second half of the fight saw Browne continue to use his size to control the smaller Toney whilst Toney reduced his offensive output which saw Browne take the later rounds to record a 117-111, 119-109 and 120-108 victory on the three judge’s scorecards.

Unbeaten Heavyweight Giant Lucas Browne: Will He Be The First Man To Stop James Toney?

By James Slater: James “Lights Out” Toney has been somewhat quiet as of late; the 44-year-old living legend not having fought since his April 2012 stoppage win over Bobby Gunn. Aside from calling out British heavyweight giant Tyson Fury late last year (a fight that failed to materialize and perhaps would not be sanctioned in the U.K anyway), Toney has made no headlines.

But now, the word is the former middleweight, super-middleweight and cruiserweight world champ could be facing another unbeaten big man in a fight this spring. Australian man mountain, Lucas “Big Daddy” Browne has been quoted in an article on Boxing News Magazine’s web site as saying a fight between he and Toney is “80 to 90-percent going to happen.”
