Imagine being a ranked heavyweight contender coming off a losing world title challenge to Muhammad Ali and then going in with, back-to-back, Earnie Shavers and George Foreman.
There are probably quite a few fighters from over the years that pop up in your mind as far as guys who never seemed to get a break or, with them, rarely catching one.
…And A Genuine “How The Hell Did He Get Back Up!” Moment!
The great Earnie Shavers recently passed away, this at the age of 78.
James Tillis, dubbed “Quick,” and for a time trained by Archie Moore, and by Muhammad Ali’s great trainer, Angelo Dundee, was oncd a truly bright talent, expected to go places.
Fight fans the world over are saddened right now, this due to the passing of a genuine boxing legend – a fighter many rank as THE hardest punching heavyweight of them all.
“My win over Jimmy Ellis was a good win for me. That win really opened things up for me. He was a former heavyweight champion and I handled him with ease and showed the world my power,” Earnie Shavers on his KO win over Ellis, from June 18, 1973.
Dubbed “The Puncher of the Century,” and with good reason, Earnie Shavers turns 77 today. The man born in Garland, Alabama is one of the last few remaining survivors of that golden age for the heavyweight division: the 1970s, when there were so many great fighters all rivaling each other, when they’re so many great fights taking place when fight fans the world over were spoiled and never realised it.
He wasn’t called “The Puncher of the Century” for nothing, and there really is no denying the withering punching power the great (or near-great, depending on your view) Earnie Shavers possessed.
“Puncher of the Century” Earnie Shavers arrived on the world stage on this day back in 1973, as the not-yet-shaven-headed bomber took out former WBA heavyweight champ Jimmy Ellis inside a round.
