Mayweather Jr. at 150.3 lbs; Canelo 166.8 lbs. 30-day weigh-in

WBA/WBC junior middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (42-0-1, 30 KO’s) was supposed to becoming to September 14th fight Floyd Mayweather Jr. (44-0, 26 KO’s) a lot lighter than he did in his previous fight against Austin Trout where Canelo weighed in at 172 lbs. the night of the fight, but it doesn’t look like that’s going to happen judging by the mandatory 30-day weigh-in held on Wednesday.

The maximum allowable limit for the weigh-in was 169 lbs. Canelo weighed in at 166.8 lbs., which is slightly heavier than Canelo weighed in at for his 30-day weigh-in for his fight against Trout. Canelo weighed in at 166.5 lbs. for the Trout fight.

Canelo rehydrated to 172 lbs. for that fight. So if that pattern holds, and it looks like it will, we can expect Canelo to be over 170 lbs. when he steps inside the ring to fight Mayweather at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Nevada.

That’s going to be tough for Canelo, because he looked gassed out after only 4 rounds against Trout, and who knows what would have happened had there not been open scoring used, and if the fight hadn’t taken place in San Antonio, Texas.

The fight might have been a lot more interesting if it had taken place in Las Vegas instead of Texas. Canelo’s work is going to be a little harder in making weight for this fight, because he has to get down to the 152 lb. catch-weight. Canelo won’t have the extra pounds of weight for this fight.

He’s get down all the way t 152, and it’s going to be interesting to see if he can actually do that. In the photo of Canelo at the 30-day weigh-in yesterday, he looked like a guy that badly needs to be fighting in the middleweight division, and not at 154.

Mayweather Jr. weighed in at 150.3 lbs, according to Sportstalk200. That’s 1.5 lbs. below the 152 lb. limit. Mayweather Jr. doesn’t have to work hard to make weight, because he’s already made weight.

So Canelo already has a near 20 pound advantage over Mayweather, and that advantage is going to stay that weight. If anything, Canelo is going to go up well past 170 lbs, because he really did look like someone who had dehydrated to get down to the 166.8 lbs.
