By Robert Brown: Chauncy Welliver has been well established in the top 10 in the WBC Rankings, currently at number 8, he is now ahead of up and coming exciting heavy weight and possible contender Robert Helenius on the WBC rankings. Helenius appears to be possibly receiving a title shot and Welliver is stuck fighting lower ranked opponents despite being ahead of Helenius in the WBC rankings.
Welliver is still unable to get a date with a marquee top 10 contender such as Chris Arreola who he has repeatedly challenged most notably on a previous episode of “on the Ropes” boxing show hosted by Jenna J and Geoff Ciani, on that show Welliver has also stated that he would like to fight David Tua and had mentioned that Tua had struggled with him in previous sparring sessions.
So the fact that Chauncy Welliver has received ongoing criticism in the past is unreasonable and the criticism is unwarranted, Welliver has previously stated himself that he is not fighting the best out there for the main reason being these fighters will not take the money he is able to offer.
However since moving to China for some recent bouts and with China looking like being the next growth corridor in boxing Welliver has a possibility of getting some fights with some notable opponents in the future.
At the moment Chauncy Welliver seems to, in my opinion have the Aarom Pryor and Marvin Hagler syndrome in which he is a big risk for little reward, Welliver is a durable fighter with a good chin. Welliver has knocked out his last 5 opponents, granted they have been lower caliber opponents, but these are guys Welliver would have defiantly been going the distance with before his recent switch to trainer Joe Hipp who has most notably increased his power.
These are the major reasons why top 10 contenders do not want to fight him because he always was a durable fighter with a good chin, but now with a significant increase in power added to his arsenal I believe that these fighters consider him too much of a danger for the monetary reward that is currently on offer.
I do not see personally that the current broken down past his prime version of David Tua as a reasonable challenge for Welliver at this point of their careers, my personal opinion is that he will knockout Tua in relevantly easy fashion and Tua since losing to Monte Barrett is not the name at this point to get Welliver the recognition he needs to boost him into title calculations.
He has also stated that he would like to fight Kali Meehan and Rafael Zumbano who is currently ranked number 14 in the WBO rankings, however since Robert Helenius is looking for notable opponents to build up his record and has seemed to have disposed of most of these opponents in relatively easy knockouts, I believe that Welliver would be the perfect person because of his durability and chin to see whether Helenius is ready for higher quality opponents.
However because of their relationship with each other and the amount of exposure to each other that they have had something tells me Helenius’s management will be unwilling to expose the fighter to such a situation which is unfortunate because I believe would be a good fight and a good test for Robert Helenius, instead it appears Helenius is going after Alexander Povetkins WBA regular belt, which I believe is fraudulent and should not exist in the first place.
I hope that Welliver is no longer stuck in the wilderness and after hopefully disposing of Rob Calloway which is expected in China, Welliver will start to get the recognition and due credit from the boxing public which now in a lot of quarters appears to be lacking.
