News – Diaz vs. Cayo on July 31st

HOLLYWOOD, FL, July 28 – Before former world champion Julio Diaz faces unbeaten Victor Manuel Cayo, and heavyweight bombers Carl Davis Drumond and Derric Rossy collide at the Hard Rock Live in Hollywood, Florida this Friday night, July 31st, some of boxing’s hottest prospects will take to the ring for perhaps the most explosive night of boxing this summer.

Scheduled to be in action will be unbeaten rising stars Jonathan Gonzalez, Danny O’Connor, Donovan George, Artur Szpilka, as well as debuting Cuban amateur star Luis Franco.Tickets for this event, which is presented by Seminole Warriors Boxing, are priced at $27, $52, $102 and $152, and may be purchased at the Hard Rock Live Box Office or by going online at www.TicketMaster.com.

Doors open at 6:30pm, and the first bell rings at 7pm. The ESPN2 Friday Night Fights telecast begins at 8pm ET / 5pm PT.

Debuting on July 31st is Havana’s own Luis Franco, a 2004 Olympian with over 400 amateur fights who is considered to be one of the top fighters to emerge from Cuba in years. He will face Nassau’s Katio Ferguson (2-2-1, 1 KO) in a junior lightweight bout scheduled for four rounds.The pride of Caguas, Puerto Rico, 2008 Olympian Jonathan Gonzalez (3-0, 3 KOs) has made a smooth transition to the pro game, winning all three of his bouts via knockout. On Friday, he will face experienced veteran Jorge Barajas (5-3, 2 KOs) of Boise, Idaho in a four round welterweight bout.

2008 US Olympic alternate Danny O’Connor (7-0, 2 KOs) has improved with each and every pro bout, most recently turning back 30 fight veteran Sebastien Hamel in June. Expected to bring a loud contingent of New England fans to the Hard Rock, Framingham, Massachusetts’ O’Connor is hoping to add another win to his record when he takes on Cincinnati’s James Helmes (6-3, 1 KO) in a junior welterweight six rounder.

Chicago knockout artist Donovan George (16-0-1, 14 KOs) has been on a tear through the super middleweight division, winning his last nine fights by knockout. This Friday he looks for a perfect ten when he battles San Juan’s Emmanuel Gonzalez (9-5, 4 KOs) in a six round attraction.

In cruiserweight action, it should be a war to remember when Wieliczka, Poland’s Artur Szpilka (4-0, 2 KOs) makes his United States debut against Ocala, Florida’s Jeremy May (0-1), who first made his name in combat sports as a mixed martial arts fighter who appeared on The Ultimate Fighter reality show.
